vientiane to udon thani by bus

Some of the answers on a Lonely Planet Thorn Tree travel forum thread that was begun back in September 9, 2009, covered this route and transport mode — the thread was titled Vientiane to Chiang Mai.

Also maybe give the TripAdvisor Vientiane Forum’s thread VIP bus from Vientiane to Udon Thani a look — it was begun June 27, 2008, and ran into a third page in length.

Travelfish‘s Lao forum has an old thread begun in 2006 that has responses right into the current year of 2011 — there may be a little help within it: VIENTIANE TO UDON THANI AIRPORT. Similarly, a Thai Visa Forum thread begun November 11, 2007, titled Bus Vientiane Udon Thani schedule could also have something for you.

Another Lonely Planet Thorn Tree travel forum thread that may or may not be too dated by now is Int’l Bus Service – Vientiane to Udon Thani (begun February 11, 2007).

VirtualTourist‘s Vientiane Travel Forum has four threads on the topic that I am aware of: Vientiane to Udon Thani bus journey (begun January 17, 2011); International bus from vientiane to udon thani (begun February 11, 2008); thai lao friendship bus (begun October 25, 2007); and Udon Thani to Vientianne and vice versa (begun January 13, 2007).

The reason I cite so many of these forum links is not necessarily for the accurate and detailed busing information they offer, but also for the impressions and observations of the past travelers who have made the trip. Reading about what someone else experienced or observed can do much to prepare you for eventualities you may not have considered.

LaoWorld.net offers central bus terminal – time table between udonthani and vientiane — it gives a timetable for traveling in either direction. Don’t be put off too much by the 2008 date — it was last updated on March 12, 2011.

Travelfish describes the busing methods from Vientiane on their page titled Vientiane Getting there and away — just scroll down the page to the proper section for buses.

Check out the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) website — it offers Visa and bus schedule information here.

Entry from: Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
Entry Title: “Beerlao with that?”

Entry:

“Laos was somewhere I didnt expect to find myself during this trip. Having been here 2 years ago in the pre-pod days, I was interested to see what, if anything, had changed.

So, after a pleasant flight to Udon Thani from Singapore, I headed straight from the airport to the Thai-Laos border around 60 km away. During the oligatory waiting around time at the border post, I met Alex, an Aussie working in Laos as a biologist. After exchanging pleasantries, he kindly offered me a lift into Vientiane – about 20 km away – on his dirt bike. Not one to turn down a freebie I jumped at the offer. After about 5 km of trying to balance my bags and stay upright on the bike, I was almost regretting the decision.

Alex explained to me that construction projects were continuing at pace in and around Vientiane, primarily financed by the Japanese and Australians and had done since his arrival some two years ago. There was certainly evidence of this as we made our way towards Vientiane itself, with road workers lining the roadway. Alex even told me that the Australian Rugby board had sponsored an aid project aimed at improving Laotian Rugby; knowing the size of Laotians and Asian people in general, I would suggest the Aussies are having a laugh!

Managing to stay upright on the bike, bags intact, we reached the centre of Vientiane – Laos’ very laidback capital. I bade farewell to Alex, and headed to find a place for the night. Finding a place to drop the bags quickly I set about sorting my Chinese visa out. The guesthouse I was staying at suggested the Chinese Embassy closed at midday; with the prospect of a $6 return trip, it made sense to let the guesthouse sort my application out for a small fee.

Visa situation in hand, I decided to revisit the Morning Market at Talat Sao, east of the main centre, for a quick look around. After amusing myself for a while, being harangued by the many vendors of fake Thai-made European, football shirts – a Red Everton shirt being the highlight – I made my way to Patuxai. Patuxai being the Laotian equivalent of the Arc de Triomphe, but with four rather than two arches.

Working up a thirst, walking back to town I remembered an Indian restaurant on the strip opposite the mighty, Mekong River. Tucking into the curry and a Beerlao – Southeast Asias finest beer – I watched as the world or more acccurately, the backpackers wandered by, many adorning awful aviator-style sunglasses and silly hats.

Relocating to a spot beside the Mekong as the sun went down, I was joined by a American named Chuck (I did ask him whether it was his real name, and he reckons it is). Chuck hails from Buffalo, upstate New York, and is rather loud, even for an American. He provided some amusement, especially for an old fella (he must of been approaching 60), but I was happy when we were joined by a French couple – Chantel and Patrice – who allegedly knew Chuck.

I sank a couple more Beerlao, tucked into somemore local food, then made my way back to the guesthouse….with Chuck at close quarters. Hitting the main riverside street I spotted a familiar figure making his way towards me. It was only Stockport Gareth, last seen in Perth in mid December. Since then hed been meandering around Southeast Asia baffling locals with his accent.

Deciding to head back to whence I’d come from, we shared a few beers and swapped stories. As the night drew on Gareth decided he fancied a late night feed, so we wandered back to in central Vientiane past the rabied dogs and the smattering of transexuals in search of some fastish food. Finding nothing open, I bid Gareth farewell as he was on his way back to Bangkok in the morning, and headed back to the guesthouse.

A large English-style breakfast in the morning set me up for the day, as I headed for Xieng Khuan (Buddha Park). Located around 25 km south from Vientiane, I jumped on a bus and made the 45-minute journey there. Arriving near the entrance, I heard a rather loud American accent coming from the viccinity of the Park; sure enough Chuck had found his way there. He was in deep conversation with a local guide and 3 Australian girls, so I …”
