There are an enormous number of videos available on the Web that relate to Udon Thani, and a simple search done on YouTube will reveal this. I’ve even managed to put up a few.
And so have UdonMap. The page I linked to does not showcase all of their videos, but it appears to be a work in progress — maybe one day it will become their video library. Note that the forum also has a section for videos: Udon Thani & Thailand Video Clips.
But to view YouTube videos, it is not essential to go there to find them. Just as various sites collect together YouTube’s Thai music videos, there are also sites that have compiled their own collection of Udon Thani videos, believe it or not. And the sites are not always sites you would expect to be doing this — for example, One Pakistan. I’m sure there will be duds — videos are always being pulled on YouTube, or else user accounts are closed down; and this results in video screens on many websites that have nothing to play. I have those dead spaces on various posts in this blog — I embed a video, but it later is removed at YouTube. And my site is left with a video screen that no longer links to a video. It is an annoyance any website that tries to include YouTube videos must eventually contend with. At any rate, the point I was getting to about One Pakistan is that the page I have linked to has 36 video entries — three dozen. Yet it is apparently only the first page of what is currently a total of 84 pages, so that is going to be a huge collection — duds or mislabeled errors notwithstanding.
Not all collections of videos are as ambitious as One Pakistan‘s. As an illustration, I think I only counted 14 videos offered at Info UdonThani.com.
Videos are certainly not as good as being in Udon Thani, but they do help. And sometimes I will come across an occasional video of a village that so keenly reminds me of my own wife’s village, that it has almost hurt. You see, it has been a little over six years since I was last in Thailand — 2005, the year I married my wife, Jack (Supranee). Not everyone who loves Thailand can afford regular jaunts there — especially when it is not just the Farang, but also a Thai wife and her two teen-aged sons. Jack’s sons joined us here in Canada in September, 2008 — or rather, she brought them here to Canada with her, after a trip back to Thailand to fetch them. The following year (2009), the three of them returned to Thailand to visit their home in Nong Soong while I remained here working, but that was the last time we have courted the debt such a trip costs. I am retired now, with a very limited pension. If ever an emergency crops up — say, something happen to my wife’s mother — Jack would probably do the trip back to Thailand by herself. One of her sons is now in the final year of high school; the other is in Grade VIII. My hope is that they will both remain dependants for only a few more years, and then Jack and I will be freed up to make some extended stays in her home country. Her sons can do as they wish, earning their own ways in the World.
If or whenever I do get to be in Thailand again, I know I will be amassing an enormous collection of video footage — after all, I never dreamed in 2005 that my visit then might well be my last. So until I do find myself in Thailand again, I will have to settle upon what videos my wife and I now have, and what we can find to view on the Internet.
