“Because of all the drama in Bangkok, we decided to fly from Udon Thani (in northeast Thailand about 2 hours from Vientiane) to Phuket. We’ve heard plenty of rumors about Phuket and we were curious to see it for ourselves. It was surprisingly quiet. Possibly because it’s the start of the low season, but also likely due to a lot of tourists avoiding Thailand at the moment.
We spent one night in Phuket town (not that great) and one night at Patong Beach (not as seedy as we were expecting).
From there we caught a ferry to Ko Phi Phi. It was a rainy and windy day so the trip was exciting. Phi Phi is jam packed with restaurants, bars and guesthouses (probably a little over developed, they have a problem with the sewer system backing up when it rains). We found a super cute bungalow at a great price. Unfortunately we found out they play very loud music until about 4am! Even after a rough nights sleep, we woke up excited to go SCUBA diving. We had heard the diving at Phi Phi is world class, and we were not disappointed. It was a beautiful day and we had a terrific guide. Our first dive was at Bia Nok and the second at Patay Bay. Unfortunately we didn’t see the turtles or leopard sharks we’d heard about, but we did see loads of other fish and beautiful coral. Our last day in Phi Phi was rainy again, but I salvaged the day with a terrific Thai massage.
Next we headed to Rai Leh, a beach near Krabi. The beaches here were amazing. They are surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and caves. It is a really popular spot for rock climbers. We hiked to the viewpoint for a great view. Perhaps because of all the climbers around the word ‘hike’ is tossed around lightly. It was really climbing up a very steep hill, hanging on to ropes, tree roots and rocks. By the end of the day we were covered in mud. It was fun though!
Spending time in Thailand turned out to be such a treat we stayed longer than expected. The beaches were so beautiful and the food is so good- not to mention we met a lot of fun people.”
