udon thani to bangkok flights

Domestic air travel in Thailand .????
I have two questions.
1) Flights are departing from both the airports namely Swarnbhoomi as well as Donmueang. Which airport should I prefer? I will be staying in Sukhumvit area.
2) I will be catching the flight from Bangkok tp Udon Thani. From Udon I will travel by road to Khon Kean, Nakhon Ratchasami and Ubon Ratchasami. From there I want to go to Chiang Mai/ Chiang Rai. This distance can not be covered by road easily and I find no direct flight. So will it be necessary for me to come back to Bangkok and then catch a new flight?
Domestic flights now leave from both airports depending on which airlines your flying with. In most cases you will need to return to Bangkok to get a flight to your next destination in Thailand. Below is a good web site for flights in Thailand.
