Some people are almost always bored. Others are adept at occupying themselves quite happily with very little. I live in Canada, but I wish I lived near Udon Thani City — preferably on a property that afforded some privacy. That lack is what I hate most about where I am living now. If I open the door to the house I am in, I am immediately within view of the windows of at least five other homes — this is before I even step foot outside. I could walk a mile and not once be outside the view of someone’s window. This speaks nothing about passing vehicular traffic.
I am trying to rehabilitate a bad leg, and walking would certainly be considered therapeutic. On November 1st of last year (2010), I managed to have the quadriceps tendon of my left leg tear clean off my knee cap (patella). Only surgery would reattach it. This required drilling holes through the knee cap — top to bottom. The tendon was attached to a number of sutures, and these were threaded through those holes at the top, and knotted tightly at the bottom, allowing the tendon to be pulled flush against the knee cap. Time was to result in the tendon adhering itself naturally to the knee cap once more — something I did not realize it would be capable of doing.
Anyway, there are a number of things I would like to attempt outdoors to challenge the leg, for the tendon was immobilized for so many months that it lost its stretch or flexibility — I could not bend my knee. I am doing this edit on October 10, 2011 — tomorrow I have my 62nd birthday — yet even though it has been just over 11 months since my surgery, I still cannot bend my knee enough to be able to walk down a stairway without resorting to the placement of both feet on each and every step. I do not have enough range of motion to sit on a bicycle and work the pedals — the knee is too limited in its ability to bend sufficiently to allow a complete cycle of the pedals. I could not even jog half-way across a street if my life depended upon it — there is not enough flex allowing the spring required for a bit of a run. I have to hop and skip, almost as if the leg is prosthetic.
I spend many hours each day seated before my computer. Yes, I have an exercise schedule of sorts, including a session of nearly a half-hour in which I work at stretching my quadriceps tendon. But I seldom go outside and walk. I am reluctant to provide a showcase for others — I always was a seclusive exerciser. Although I was a middle-distance runner for over 25 years, most of my runs were done in the darkness of deepest night. And I always worked out in private — I never in my life had a workout in a gym.
I now find this character trait of being so solitary in my activities to be working strongly against me. The things I would like to try to do outdoors for the sake of my knee are things I cannot do out of sight of the public eye — so I do not venture forth and undertake the sustained movements I would love to challenge my knee with. Finances now limit me even further — I am on a limited Pension. My Thai wife probably matches my monthly Pension with what she earns working at her restaurant downtown in Vancouver. I relied upon my own legs to transport me, and took public transport if the distance was too far. I never needed to own a car, so I never bought one, nor even got my drivers licence. The car we now have is for my wife — it carries her the 25 or so miles that she has to travel to get to work and back. And she is gone most of each day.
All of this is just to illustrate that everyone has a different take on what it is that they enjoy or want to do. If I lived in Udon Thani Province or City, my chosen activities would likely not be of any broad interest to others. The things that I would choose to do are not necessarily going to be things many others would care to share in.
If you are the sort who finds time weighs heavily even when you are on holiday, and you struggle to understand how to occupy yourself effectively, then maybe a structured list of things to see and do is valuable for you. All I ever needed was an able body — so unless I was the prisoner of some tedious social engagement that I was helpless to be free of, spending time contentedly has rarely been an issue for me.
How I spend my active leisure in the future will obviously depend upon how much of my knee I am ever able to recover — I cannot estimate that.
You have to know for yourself what it is that you enjoy or want to do. If typical sightseeing is satisfying for you, then inform yourself about what is available, and structure your itinerary accordingly. I was never much of a sightseer, so I am no authority on passing time doing ‘sightseeing’ in Udon Thani nor anywhere else — not even here where I have lived most of my life. There are many points of local interest touted for tourists that I have never laid eyes upon.
And I think I have wandered and roamed sufficiently with this topic, letting it get more personal than I had ever intended when I began this post. I apologize for that, and feel that it is best I utter nothing more.
Enjoy Udon Thani — I always have!
