The Wikitravel entry for Udon Thani has more information on Udon Thani buses than I really expected. It’s apparent, though, that whoever composed the entry does not have a favorable opinion of tuk-tuk drivers. Witness:
If you get into the bus station early in the morning and need a guest house they will pretend they can’t speak english, drive you around in a small circle ‘looking’ for guesthouses before dropping you around the corner from the station. They will then ask for 100 baht for a 30 baht ride.
I can’t speak from any experience, but this Lonely Planet forum entry from August/2009 titled Vientiene to Udon thani Airport by bus suggests the same thing:
There is a bus to Udon Thani but it terminates at the bus station. This now costs 22000 Kip or 24000 Kip at weekends.
You’ll need to factor in a little extra time to get to the airport and the extra expense/hassle of the tuk tuk sharks that swamp you when get off the bus. I ended up paying 100 baht for the tuk tuk but he started off trying to rip me for 250.
The Udonmap has a fairly humorous thread from April/2009 titled Udon Baht Buses that might serve to give you a sense of the transit system within the city.
I’m a people-person where photography is concerned, preferring to see shots of human beings as opposed to images of just “things” by themselves. But I can appreciate the work that went into collecting the numerous bus photographs in this photo-blog entry of February/2010 titled Udon Thani’s Mass Transit System.
I’d mentioned a thread on the Udonmap forum. The site also has some more official bus information here.
Another photo-blog post is titled Day 10 – Udon Thani to Vientiane; it’s from January/2010, and tells of the blogger’s efforts to get to Vientiane on that particular day after spending the night in the Top Mansion — I’ve spent at leat a couple of nights there myself with my wife, Jack.
The ThaiVisa forum has an informative thread from January/2010 titled Udon Thani To Vientianne, should the bus trip to the Laos border be of any interest to you.
Here’s a bit of a map to show where the Central Bus Station lies in relation to what used to be called the Charoensri Complex — maybe it still is so called.

This blog site offered the following:
Udon Thani bus station nearest Charoensri shopping mall
Udon Thani to Vientiane – International bus timetable (28 July 2007; still unchanged as of 11 October 2008)

NOTE:
Approx. 2.5-3h journey time including immigration clearance; 5 baht extra charge on weekends; if tickets are sold out, or the bus for a certain timeslot has been cancelled due to breakdown (there are no spare buses), it is possible to pay the normal fare for a crammed standing space – go directly to the bus & negotiate.
* Udon Thani-Vientiane International bus timetable & fares (Thai only)
(For the Website linked above, the left 3 columns are departure time, departure point in Thailand, & fare in Thai baht; right 3 columns are departure time, departure point in Laos, & fare in Lao kip.)
Again, if it is getting to Laos that is of interest to you, this article might assist: Across the Friendship Bridge: An Alternative Way to get from Thailand to Laos.
Forums can be useful, so I’m going to provide some links to a few recent threads dealing with Udon Thani buses. From Udonmap, two dealing with getting from Bangkok to Udon:
- Bus from Udon to Bangkok (it actually goes into more detail about getting to Udon from Bangkok than the reverse).
- Morchit Bus Station (Mo Chit)
I’m going to close this post with these following three photos of Udon’s No 1 Bus Station from Wikimapia.
