Transcribed from Wikitravel‘s article on Udon Thani:

Buses from Bangkok (Morchit), an 8-hour journey, arrive at the BKS station in the city.

Buses depart at least once per hour after 11AM to Nong Khai (20 baht, 1 hour, non-airconditioned 3rd class) on the Lao border. Buses from Nong Khai may drop you off north of the city. Follow the locals and hop on the waiting #6 songthaew to the bus station or take a tuk-tuk.

There are six express buses a day direct to the Morning Market in Vientiane (80 baht, 2 hours, air-con 1st class departures at 8AM, 10:30AM, 11:30AM, 2PM, 4PM, 6PM). These cross-border buses will carry passengers who have not obtained their Lao visas in advance, but may not wait long enough at the border for a visa on arrival to be applied for and issued. This isn’t a problem when the queues are short, but at busy times passengers who don’t already have their visas may be left behind and have to continue by local bus or tuk-tuk.

Please refer to that article directly, for sites like Wikitravel and Wikipedia do eventually change their information as the need may arise. What is accurate as of the date of this post will not stand indefinitely. Also, please check their article on Vientiane — it also covers a lot about getting into the country by bus from Thailand.

Travelfish has a good section on the three bus stations in Vientiane and other bus-related information, especially the details on getting into Thailand from Vientiane — something a visitor to Lao who is traveling by bus should be clear about. Also refer to Lao World — as of the date of my edit to this post on October 29, 2011, the time table article there was last updated on September 28, 2011; so depending upon when you are reading this, the information should be good. If you are reading this long after October 29, 2011, then just check to see when the last update has been — the latest amendment date is mentioned at the bottom of the page. Right now, it is listed under Notice #5 as transportation – central bus terminal – time table between udonthani and vientiane.

The official Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) website details the Thai-Lao International Bus Service. However, please note the departure times as compared with those in the Lao site just previously mentioned — those in the Lao schedule are all one hour later than on the TAT site. This is something I had not previously noticed in posting about bus travel to Vientiane. I have no explanation, unless the Lao site is listing a bus service different from what is cited on the TAT site. Also notice that the Lao site includes two extra runs than the TAT site does not mention — mid-day departures of 11:30 and 14:00.

I have just now submitted for a membership to the Lao site in order to ask about this. Perhaps I will post no further on the subject. Instead, here are a few sites that you can refer to, if they sound of interest.

[November 5, 2011, edit: I was wrong about the updating of the Lao World bus schedule. The website owner confirms to me that his schedule is incorrect at this time.

I sincerely apologize to any travelers, and hope I misled no one. --Garnet]

The Central Bus Station also offers convenient service to Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Korat and Khon Kaen in northern Thailand. From any of these cities it is easy to catch buses to other destinations within Thailand. Khon Kaen

A cheaper but still convenient alternative is to fly from Bangkok to the local airport in Udon Thani, which is about an hour away from the First Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge (pronounced sapaan mittapaap Thai-Laos hairng tee neung), which spans the Mekong …. Getting to Nong Khai is simple enough; a taxi from almost anywhere in Vientiane to the Friendship Bridge costs around 200 baht, then a tuk-tuk or shared taxi to Nong Khai town or bus station should be about 50 baht per person.

I made it to the airport bus station in decent time and took a minibus from there to the terminal (where I got a McDonald’s). I then flew from Bangkok to Udon Thani (dirt cheap on AirAsia), and at Udon Thani I got another minibus to Nong Kwai, on the border. I crossed out of Thailand and then boarded yet another minibus to nights’ accommodation – at least it included breakfast though. The next day I had my free breakfast and then went for a wander around Vientiane.
