My luggage did once fail to arrive at Udon Thani the first time I ever flew there from Canada on a flight that had two layover transfers just to get me to Bangkok. That was back in January 2003. All I had was my carry-on bag. I was quite at a loss what to do. I no longer recall the full details of how this resolved itself, but I believe that my contact information — that is, the cell phone number of one of the Thai people I had come to meet — was left when a report of the loss was made. At any rate, my luggage and I were reunited the following day — to my great relief! I had never before left North America, so finding myself in Asia for the first time on the start of a holiday without my luggage was a definite blow. Would an extra destination tag have done any good in this instance? After all, the very large piece did eventually make its way to Udon Thani, so it must have still had the official tagging that was attached by airport staff. If there had been no tagging on it whatsoever, then I suppose I would have never seen the luggage again.
