Nong Khai: Picnic on the Mekong River

DCO Thailand

During that trip back to Thailand this past Summer that my wife, Jack, made with her two sons, Tho and Pote, the clan back there had occasion to gather together and make a run from their village of Nong Soong to the city of Nong Khai. The party traveled in at least two vehicles.

Nong Khai tends to be a sort of destination for special excursions like this. It’s a reasonably long drive, and does not require costly air fares. And neighbouring Laos as it does, the locale is unique enough to hold everyone’s interest. After all, my wife’s family are not exactly travelers. She only visited Laos for the very first time a couple of years ago. Prior to that, all she had ever managed to do was a figurative visit by straddling some Thai/Laos demarcation line some years ago before I’d ever met her — possibly it was on the Friendship Bridge.

On this particular family visit to Nong Khai, one of the events the family indulged in was a picnic on a motorized enclosed barge- or raft-like river conveyance they would have hired.

Jack’s boys took this 5½-minute footage that I’ve put up on YouTube.

I’ll identify Jack’s son, Tho, as the lad in the pink shirt scrambling about in the opening sequence. His aunt Lumpoon and her husband are seated on the right towards the end of the table; and Jack and her mother are opposite them on the left side of the table.

After briefly displaying Jack and her mother, the video picks up handsome young Mark, Lumpoon’s son (and thus Jack’s nephew).

A little further into the video it is revealed that Jack’s so-called sister-cousin is also seated at this table — she is wearing glasses, and seated across from Jack.

It is reasonable to me that the near shore of the river will be Thailand, and the more distant shore Laos.

Young Pote was the initial cameraman; but the duty is taken over by someone else — probably older brother Tho — for it is Pote in the green tee-shirt who is featured at the 3½-minute mark of the video.

There is some other video footage, as well as numerous photos, that I will get around to posting here or in my blog Siam-Longings.
