Looking for professional ARAB belly dancers who teach this art to students in or around Fremont CA?
Does anyone know of a belly dancer who also teaches in her spare time ??? I am very specific about learning this form of dance from a person who is of Arab descent as they dance like nobody else can !!!
Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian have the best moves and I am hoping someone out there knows where I might be able to find such a person who either teaches professionally (prefered) or in free time.
I am willing to travel to find the right teacher. It would be nice if she were closer to Fremont, though not a necessity.
DO answer please. Hope there are people around who have learnt this dance and can give advice or know of someone in their own families who is willing to teach me.
If you really want to learn from an arab dancer you should go overseas and learn in the middle east. I think you should keep in mind that there are many spectacular dancers in the US (especially CA) who have devoted their lives to studying this art and who have specialized in a specific style (ie Egyptian, Turkish, Lebanese, etc…) and who have obtained great fame and recognition even in Middle Eastern countries. perfhaps you should try looking for them first. But other than that the only specific one that is coming to mind who is located in CA is Suhaila Salimpour (who isan American of Arab decent but was raised in the US as was her mother Jamila Salimpour). Otherwise I would ask around on Bhuz http://www.bhuz.com in the discussion forum. There’s at least a dozen people who will be able to tell you who to look for.
There are some very helpful websites offering travel information for any potential visitors to the Isaan (Isan) Region of Thailand. Here are a smattering of some of the main ones:
- TravelThailand.com: It has links offering information about most of the provinces of Isaan, which is North East Thailand. Also, refer to Isan, Thailand’s North East.
- Wikitravel.com: Isaan
- Thailand-Ticket.de: Northeast Thailand•The Isaan
- RoughGuides.com: The northeast: Isaan
- Wikipedia.com: Isan
There are various travel agencies that offer tours of the Isaan Region — some of the tour descriptions can be informative. Here are a few:
- BakTrax.com: Isan, Insects & Laos small group tour
- KKETP.com (Khon Kaen Education & Travel Programs)
- AudleyTravel.com: Visit Isaan, Thailand
And here are a few articles on Northeast Thailand (Isaan) — they vary in depth, and are not presented in any particular order:
- ThailandsWorld.com: Northeast Thailand [Isan] Tourism & Travel
- SmilingAlbino.com: Traveling Isaan: Experience the ‘Real Thailand’
- GeckoVilla.com: Travel in Northeast Thailand (Isan)
- Chiang-Mai.org: Isaan – The North East Area of Thailand

From a historical perspective, there is a rather expensive book that I came across on Amazon thoroughly describing Isaan during the years 1883-1884 when a Frenchman by the name of Étienne Aymonier explored the area — Isan Travels: Northeast Thailand’s Economy in 1883-1884. Here is Amazon’s description:
Aymonier, Etienne. Isan Travels: Northeast Thailand’s Economy in 1883-1884 A book with more detailed reports on Northeast Thailand than have ever been collected by a nineteenth-century explorer. Etienne Aymonier was a specialist in Cambodian studies and traveled together with trained Cambodian assistants through Isan from south to north and from east to west, visiting many of the region’s districts. He reports on the political situation, dependency relationships among districts and provinces and their relations with the Court in Bangkok, agricultural and forestry commodities, usage and value of various local and national currencies, ethnic and language groups living in all villages he passed through, superstitions and religion, betel and opium use and other vices, population data and numbers of registered taxable men, taxes paid to Bangkok, and “corruption money” paid to various authorities including the Siamese Court and ministry officials. Most of all, Aymonier accurately describes the accessibility overland and by water of many extremely remote areas of the interior and their trading relations. There are also detailed descriptions of important crafts such as salt production, basket weaving, iron forgery and casting, and various non-agricultural occupations and sidelines of farmers. Naturalists will find that the varieties of vegetation the author and his assistants encounter are accurately described, with special attention to various tree species, including those that produce timber and dyes, and to the availability of water, that life-bringing commodity still so scarce in today’s Isan. (Bangkok 2000; First English translation of 1895, 1897)
Now here are some further references to modern Isaan that are of varying merit, and which I am adding during a January 29, 2013, edit to this post:
