What to bring to family?
I will be traveling to Thailand to meet my girlfriends family. Now they Live in the northern Provence called Issan. They are poor, I was going to bring toys for her little brothers, but what to bring the parents????? Help……
Isan is the north-eastern part of Thailand – it’s a poor area but even there, money isn’t everything.
Bring the parents photos or posters or something else, which symbolizes or shows your your home country. They can then put on display (hopefully proudly) that their daughter has a foreign boyfriend.
Then, what you also have to do is to sponsor either a breakfast or a dinner feast for the family, family friends, and important people in the village; your girlfriend will surely know who should be invited to give you, her, and her parents “face”.
The food/drinks will be bought at the local market and prepared by the female members of the family, but you have to foot the bill.
If you further want to score points with your girlfriend’s family, then you – preferably during your first morning in the village – should let your girlfriend take you to the local temple for blessings … and to donate money or a food/gift basket to the monks.

One or two of these linked-to sites featured organized tours. If that is what appeals to you, then another possibility is this:
Thaitraveldreams.com is the website for Isan Discovery Travel, a Thailand travel agent and tour operator that offers unique cultural holidays to Thailand for adventure travelers and families with children. Choose from our special Thai cultural excursions and combine them in any way you like to define your personal Thailand travel holiday. You can add destinations as you like, even if they are not mentioned on Thaitraveldreams.com. We offer special Thai accommodation such as floating hotels, beach bungalows or a homestay with a Thai host family. A fun way to experience Thailand culture. We arrange your Thailand holidays tailored to your individual requirements.
You might get some ideas of places to see by visiting Thailand Travel Online. Another I might suggest is North-East Thailand Travel Magazine. There are plenty of others — just search them out. I missed out entirely on any exercise yesterday, so I want to ensure I have a quick workout before it gets too much later — and it is already 6:44 p.m. as I type these words.
Could I live in Thailand with 30,000 Baht a month?
Really would like to start travelling a little bit, was wondering what sort of lifestyle I could have with 30,000 a month. Also where would I best be going to stay.
We have Thai friends with families that live on less than 7000 a month – which they have to pay for rent, utility , food and school fee’s so your average Thai would love to earn 30,000 a month.
It all depends on your style and what you expect in the way of a social life.
The cheapest way to travel around Thailand is Bus or mini -van but some journeys are 12 – 16hrs.
Check out sawadee.com – then click on area ( for example Krabi ) then click on How to get there – it gives you timetables and prices ).
You can find accommodation between 300 – 500 baht a night – if you eat where the Thai’s eat you could survive on 150 Baht a day – less if you buy from market and cook yourself.
I live near Si Sa Ket in Isan nr Cambodia Border – very cheap but apart from my wife and a handful of friends no-one speaks English so I would always advise for somewhere to go where you will be able to find English speaking Thai’s and other tourists.
Bangkok – is a good starting place – stay around Khao San Road area and meet like minded people from all over the world – you never know you could hook up with those guy’s.
Do plenty of research on the net – good places to visit are Chiang Mai , Mae Hong Son , Chiang Rai
For the Beach Pattaya is very good value as well as Koh Chang
You can even find cheap accomadation in Krabi but if I were you stay clear of Phuket – most expensive place in Thailand.
From Krabi you can get bus to Surat Thani and visit Koh Samui for a few days and near by Koh Phangan for Full Moon Party. ( cheap place in chaweng I know – right by the nightlife and a few minutes from the beach Panupong apartments )
To enjoy yourself in Thailand you need a minimum budget of 2,500 Baht a day and to party do trips 5,000 baht a day so 30,000 Baht is do able but not advisable.
