Although this Thai Visa Forum thread was begun back on March 23, 2009, it may shed some useful light on the subject: Chiang Mai To Udon Thani Bus. As well, another thread of May 14, 2010, vintage reported one traveler’s experience with such a journey: Vip Bus Chiang Mai To Udon Thani: Vientiane visa run from Chiang Mai. And on June 9, 2010, someone posted as a query Vip Bus: Chiang Mai to Udon Thani.
Lonely Planet‘s Thorn Tree travel forum has a more recent thread (November 16, 2010) titled Chiang-mai to Udon Thani (the slow way) any ideas?????? The discussion touches upon more than just buses, but it may nonetheless prove of benefit. On the same forum, there is a September 5, 2011, thread titled Chiang Mai to Udon Thani – stopover? that you could take a look at. Also, from August 2, 2011: Chiang Mai to Udon Thani.
The website Chiang-Mai.org has a rather useful page titled Travel Guide Chiang Mai – Bus Times to other Thai Towns that ought to help you out a little.
A report at Trip Hole titled Visa run trip from Chiang Mai to Vientiane, Laos is quite detailed. I would venture that it was posted in early 2011.
