There is a very detailed article at GoNOMAD titled Across the Friendship Bridge: An Alternative Way to get from Thailand to Laos that covers busing from Udon Thani to Vientiane. All we can do is hope that it is kept updated, for there is no clear indication of when the article was posted.

A similar situation exists with the Thai Web Guide article Visa Run – Bangkok To Vientiane which gets into busing from Udon Thani.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) website has a page that covers their international bus run. Again, we have to hope that they maintain the updates.

Or you might prefer a regular bus — Lao World offers this: central bus terminal – time table between udonthani and vientiane. As of the date of this edit to my post on October 18, 2011, that Lao World information seems to have last been updated on September 28, 2011.

[November 5, 2011 edit:  I was wrong about the Lao World update.  The schedule it offers is currently incorrect.  The owner of that website responded to an enquiry I made and said as follows.

I sincerely hope I have not inconvenienced any travelers who may have followed my advice about the timetable.  --Garnet]

Travelfish has a good description of Vientiane’s three bus stations and their various runs — just in case you may need to know how to return to Udon Thani. And for some more information on the required Visa to gain entry to Laos, the Wikitravel article on that country gets into it in the section Get in.

Some other discussions about the bus trip exist on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree travel forum: from September 5, 2010, Udon Thani to Vientiane; and from February 25, 2011, Bus from Ventiane to Udon Thani.

The Gecko Villa resort has some advice on the journey.

Other sites discussing the trip are Asia For Visitors and TravBuddy‘s February 3, 2010, Travel from Udon Thani Airport to Vientiane.

To read of an individual account of the trip, there is the blog Amyo is a geek‘s January 26, 2010, post Day 10 – Udon Thani to Vientiane. As well, there is the undated Trip Hole account Visa run trip from Chiang Mai to Vientiane, Laos — the comments are from 2011, so the piece may well be from 2011, too (be sure to read the comments, for some offer updates or corrections on information).

And LaosTravel.info has a brief mention of the Udon Thani trip in an undated acount titled Travel story : Vientiane – Luang Prabang.

Entry from: Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
Entry Title: “Heading to the capital…for a rest!”

Entry:

“We opted for another minibus to take us the 150km to Vientiane. A frustrating start to the journey ensued once again, as we were dropped at the bus station – only return to town to pick up others, then back to the station, then back to town to get more, and back to the station again before we eventually left an hour later than we started. On the upside, at least it gave Ben the chance to realise he’d left his hat in the room, and gave us time to get back to the hotel for it! A smooth trip followed (for once!), with glorious working air con, (first time in Asia!) and only stopping for a 5 minute loo break. We made it Vientiane just 4 hours later, in good time for some lunch. We had one night booked near the river in a hotel with a bizarrely high up double bed!

By way of sights there is not too much to see in this city, and to be honest we were pretty much all sightseed out for this trip! So we spent the afternoon just taking a nice stroll around the centre, noticing that every other block had a Wat on it! The riverfront was not as picturesque as it maybe will eventually be, as there is a lot of construction going on, apparently until 2013!

I found a place to have a massage, and foolishly decided to go with the traditional Lao technique… I say foolishly because it was PAINFUL. It was similar to a Thai massage where they pull your toes and fingers out & sit on top of you, pulling your body in every direction possible (and not possible). I certainly felt good afterwards, but it was not the relaxing experience I had gone in for! It didn’t help that I passed a cockroach on my way up the stairs, and spent the hour lying on thin mattress on the floor wandering if there may be any more lying in wait, terror! On our final night I also treated myself to a manicure and pedicure. Again, not a relaxing experience for me, as I HATE the sound and feel of filing nails, but always love the end result – and for less than half the price of the same in Europe I am certainly not going to complain!

We moved hotels the following day, to our Four Seasons replacement… The Novotel was the only hotel we could find at a reasonable price that had a pool, our one major requirement for these final few days… It turned out to be quite a soulless hotel, with a large, beautiful (and practically empty!) pool as well as a well equipped gym. This meant we had two days to fully relax, and try and get in some crucial sunbathing to top up our tans. Surprisingly, after 8 months away, we have found very little time for actually relaxing!

We walked into town for our meals, as it was rather pricy at the hotel. We found a lovely French restaurant which used to be frequented by Western journalists during the Secret War. We ate two dinners here, and then ate our final meal in Laos in a local restaurant, set up to help the street kids find work & learn the catering trade. The food was scrummy, and the kids serving us were so polite. We were glad to finally make it to one of these street kid restaurants, as the one in Cambodia was closed for New Year celebrations when we were there.

We were supposed to travel overland into Thailand over the Friendship Bridge before catching a flight from the Northern Thai town of Udon Thani down to Bangkok – much cheaper than flying internationally from Laos. However, we worked out with the hassle of the journey and news reports of Thai Red Shirt protesters blocking roads in the area around the border, we decided it was safer (and easier on our tired backpacker bodies!) to pay the extra and just fly from Vientiane.

So that’s it, bye bye Laos, bye bye travelling… just Bangkok airport and a 10km return journey to our nice hotel left to go…!”
