Vientiane

Check out the round of advice at Lonely Planet‘s Thorn Tree travel forum — specifically, this 2008 thread in response to the question about the International bus from Udon Thani to Talat Sao, Vientiane. Someone else initiated a thread in 2009 with his query re: Air Asia and Udon Thani to Vientiane. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) does post a schedule for the Thai-Lao International Bus Service, along with related information.

Back in 2008, the French site VoyageForum.com dealt with the question Bus Air Asia Udon Thani-Vientiane?

Wikitravel has involved itself in the advice game concerning this trip, as well — if you check this one out, also be sure to see the site’s entry for Vientiane.

The man behind UdonMap covered the options in a thread that ran to two pages back in 2008 and 2009: Nong Khai Immigration Office Details.

There is a nice account from 2009 in a blog called Leave nothing but footprints that presented the blogger’s traveling experience in getting to Nong Khai: Train from Ayutthaya to Udon Thani, and to Nong Khai somehow? He had never been to this part of Thailand before, so his observations as a first-timer were quite interesting.

Anyone who understands Russian will likely find this 2010 forum thread to be of some use: Виза на 6 мес во Вьентьяне, Лаос – полная инструкция (translated as “Visa in 6 mo. in Vientiane, Laos – complete instruction”).

Here are a few further discussions:

The Road to Vientiane. Posted by cedricvalera on Thursday, June 30, 2011. “Where the hell are we?” That’s what I thought when we broke out of Udon Thani Airport in northeastern Thailand. Sort of a border town between Thailand and Laos, Our dodgy research instructed us to find the bus station in Udon Thani proper and ride the aptly named Friendship Bus. Really, such a bus exists. A nice and cool Toyota van brings us to the city proper and we wonder how the hell this place is
