Wikitravel‘s article on Vientiane does quite a thorough job of covering how to Get in to the city — especially in the section By road. The article on Udon Thani also touches upon traveling to Vientiane.
The Thai Visa Forum has some good threads. One titled Laos Visa Run Completed: Play-by-play was posted May 17, 2011, and gave considerable detail.
The subject is quite recurring in forums.
Lonely Planet‘s Thorn Tree travel forum has a thread started August 26, 2010, titled Udon Thani to Vientiane.
A somewhat older thread is at a forum on TripAdvisor — titled Udon Thani to Vientiane, it was begun November 11, 2009. That’s about as far back as I would personally care to be researching.
Go-NOMAD covers this mode of travel in an article titled Across the Friendship Bridge: An Alternative Way to get from Thailand to Laos. I believe I have referred to it in previous posts, mentioning that because it is undated, the information may well be stale in some respects.
Neither could I locate a date on the article Visa Run – Bangkok To Vientiane – Applying For Free Thai Tourist Visas at ThaiWebGuide. Also undated is Travel story : Vientiane – Luang Prabang at LaosTravel.info, the early portion of which discusses the trip from Udon Thani to Laos.
Asia For Visitors is the same — their piece titled Getting to Vientiane is also undated, so a reader must keep this factor in mind. It is best to mine all of the articles, comparing details.
A TripHole post titled Visa run trip from Chiang Mai to Vientiane, Laos seems to have been posted early in 2011 — it offers advice concerning the Udon Thani leg.

The Road to Vientiane. Posted by cedricvalera on Thursday, June 30, 2011. “Where the hell are we?” That’s what I thought when we broke out of Udon Thani Airport in northeastern Thailand. Sort of a border town between Thailand and Laos, … Our dodgy research instructed us to find the bus station in Udon Thani proper and ride the aptly named Friendship Bus. Really, such a bus exists.
