bus from udon thani to chiang mai

A thread was begun on the UdonMap forum late September, 2008, that gave some thoughts of several forum members: Bus to Chiang Mai…... More recently, there is this very short thread from this past April: bus from Udon > Chiang Mai. And from July of last year: Bus times from Udoni Thani to Chiang mai (night bus). Finally, from December, 2008: VIP bus to Chiang Mai……
The most current forum thread on the subject that I could find is from June, 2011, on TripAdvisor: Udon Thani Forum: Udon to Chiang Mai by bus overnight.
Evidently a traveler making the trip needs to be at the correct bus station to start off the journey — from ThaiTransit.blogspot.com:
The mass transit system of Udon Thani is made up of mostly high frequency “truck – bus” services with only one full size bus route that uses very old non aircon buses. Besides the urban mass transit Udon Thani has two large bus terminals that service its large rural hinterland and link Udon Thani to other cities in Issarn as well as Bangkok. The main bus terminal is located in the innercity and provides service to all parts of Issarn as well as Bangkok. The other bus terminal is located a 20 minute bus ride to the north west of Udon Thani. This bus terminal provides service to Chiang Mai and other northern Thailand destinations as well as Loei. This terminal is fairly quiet compared to the main terminal.
LaoWorld.net has a bus schedule of departures times from Udon Thani to Chiang Mai — it seems to have last been updated on February 12, 2011.

Entry from: Udonthani-Nongkhai-Vientine, Thailand
Entry Title: “File-4: Right Turn is the WRONG TURN!”
Entry:
“Hello folks,
Have you been to Vientine(Laos’s capital) from Udonthani, via Nongkhai?
Udonthani-Nongkhai-Vientine has been increasingly becoming a common route of Visa-Run. After Thai immigration started to limit visa-free stay up to 90days in 180days in a year, in late September 2006.
There are several things you should know about Nongkhai in advance. Especially if you are a:
1-No-vice traveller from Nongkhai to Vientine.
2-Passport holder other than Japanese who intends to stay in Laos for less than 14 days. In such a case, Laos immigration waives the cost of 30-day Visa on-arrival(this exemption only applies to Japanese passport holders).
There are lists of things you should know before you commence your travel from Nongkhai to Vientine.
1-Nongkhai has no city buses or truck buses unlike in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.
2-The only availabe means of transport to travellers, are 3-wheel taxis.
3-And you need to negotiate the fare before you hire one of them.
They often quote stupid amount like B300 from the bus terminal to Thai-Laos Friendship Bride(border bridge).
So just strongly continue to say ‘NO’ until they bring down the price to moderate range;B15-20(for 4), B30-50(for 1).
4-These drivers often try to take you to the roadside travel agents(in Prajak Rd) for Kick-Backs from them.
Namely, Nohgkhai Miracle Travel.
In such a case, just strongly keep saying ‘NO’ until they give up. Otherwise, there will be quite an upsetting consequence: B900 Rip-Off . How it happens? Please read on.
5-The cost of Laos 30-day on-arrival visa is payable either 30 US DOLLAR OR 1300 THAI BAHT.
You will be better of paying in USD than in THB.
Because U$30 is almost the same as B900-930(depending on the exchange rate). If it is in Thai baht, you will be paying extra B400.
6-Overall cost of departure from Thailand & entry into Laos is roughly B965.
B15: Inter-immigration shuttle that operates between Thai departure point & Laos entry point. Operates every 15minutes or so.
B900-930: 30-day Laos visa on-arrival(if paid in USD, INSTEAD OF THB).
*Don’t forget to prepare extra 2-3 U$1 notes for when you might arrive at Lao immigration during their ‘lunch time’. In such a case, they charge extra U$1 for the overtime. If you don’t have that one dollar, you will have to pay the whole visa cost in 1300 Thai bahts. So be well assorted.
B10: Laos immigration admission fee(whatever time it is).
B50: Shared taxi ride(4-6) from the Laos entry point to Vientine CBD area(roughly 23km).
The trick of these Rip-Off agents is:
They collet B1800 from you. B900 is for US30(Laos visa fee). Rest of the B900 is merely for filling in an application form for on-arrival visa & Laos arrival card. Plus your transfer from the border bridge to Vientine, in a shabby van without airconditioning. What is worse, they often make you wait for 2-3 hours at their shop until they believe they got enough foreigners to fill their van seats. This is what upsetting conseauence is all about.
They steal B900 from you, almost for nothing. You can easily fill in these documents without any assisstance.
And the cost of transfer between immigrations, and to Vientine is very minimal.
So be knowledgeable & well-assorted. This way, you can beat the crooks’s attempt to rip you off.
Hope my photos attached would assist you well.
Today, I have brought you some extra photos taken during my stay in …”
