A clear schedule I can point you to for the Bangkok to Udon Thani route is at Asia Discovery. The page currently says that it was last updated February 1, 2010, but perhaps there has been no need to change anything. Other links on the page will offer further details on using the State Railway, such as the fact that first class equates to a private compartment…but a private compartment is intended for two persons. Consequently, if you insist on one for just yourself, then you will need to purchase two first class tickets.
I have never ridden a train in Thailand — apart from the Bangkok Skytrain — so please bear with me here. But if you refer to the Bangkok to Udon Thani schedule, you will note that the Express #069 is listed as leaving Bangkok at 8:00 p.m., and arriving in Udon Thani at 7:14 a.m. the next morning. I used a site called Thaifocus — which has lots of excellent information explaining the various classes of train — and checked out their interactive timetable, choosing a Bangkok departure date (for two adults) of January 28, 2012. This was the result:
The 8:00 p.m. train is listed as arriving in Udon Thani at 7:25 a.m. as opposed to 7:14 a.m. That difference is nothing big, but the schedule also shows that there are two types of 1st and 2nd class: air conditioned, and fan. Which of these is Asia Discovery providing a ticket for, I wonder? Air conditioning is twice the price of mere fan cooling.
Maybe Air Discovery explained all this elsewhere, and I just happened to miss it?
A third State Railway schedule for this route is available at SiamHotel.net. The same Express #069 train is here shown as departing Bangkok at 8:45 p.m., and arriving the next morning in Udon Thani at 7:57 a.m. Interestingly, a different train does leave at 8:00 p.m., and supposedly arrives at Udon Thani at 5:05 a.m. the next morning. And there are three other trains listed as leaving the same day, as well.
That’s something you’re going to have to wrestle with! What’s the truth?
Some further descriptions of the various classes of train are available at the website Seat61, but the schedules provided do not include anything mentioning Udon Thani. Still, there is considerable information on the site — including how to book an overland train journey from London all the way to Thailand, or vice versa (hint: plan on at least three weeks of travel and some hotel bookings; and you will have to arrange tickets for the various sections by yourself, as well as several different visas, for no travel agency has the route on their itinerary).
I hope that the preceding has been more helpful to you than it was confusing. I have posted the link to the official State Railway of Thailand website in earlier posts concerning train travel, but the schedules they have do not directly mention Udon Thani.
You might find one or more of the following websites to be at least entertaining, if not helpful:
On the way there I stopped off in the northern Thai city called Udon Thani for a few days. Udon is only an hours bus ride from the Thai-Laos border. To get to Udon Thani from Bangkok you can go via train from Hualamphong …
