Issan House
Until I began working on this post, I was unfamiliar with this project that is located at 23 Park Avenue, Yonkers, New York 10703, U.S.A. Descriptions typically state that the actual building is a former monastery, but I see here that is is more specifically “a landmark 1921 neoRomanesque Roman Catholic convent in Yonkers, home to a cloistered order of sisters for more than seventy-five years.“
Basically: Issan House is located in a 55,000-square-foot facility and is co-located with the Greyston Maitri Adult Day Health Program, a larger supportive community-health program designed for people living with HIV.
The name “Issan” is a tribute to San Francisco Buddhist priest Issan Dorsey (born Tommy Dorsey in 1933 in Santa Barbara, Calif.). Dorsey founded a model of hospice for people dying of AIDS in 1987. He named the hospice “Maitri,” which is Sanskrit for “loving kindness” or “compassionate action.” Greyston’s Issan House and Maitri program honor Dorsey’s legacy.

You may have noticed that although the physical Issan House is a former Catholic nunnery and now has a multidenominational chapel, an organization of Buddhists is very much responsible for its existence, as the mention of Issan Dorsey earlier should suggest — please refer to the Wikipedia article Zen Peacemakers for more on this.
Even if people couldn’t see the compassion what Issan was doing, most everyone trusted him enough to give money. Another friend of his bought the building next to our small Victorian house, and we bought back the lease.
