Udon Thani

I am unsure how long the blog site 2Butterfly will be around — I do not recall coming across it before, and its interesting posts only seem to span August through December of 2010 — but the owner posted some personal reviews of what Udon Thani offers for “go go bars.”

Quoting from the November 20, 2010 post Udon Thani Nightlife Map:

1. U-Want a-go-go / karaoke and F1 disco

U-Want seemed to be predominately Thai. Thai language skills may be mandatory. Good for a different type of experience and better looking than Wolverine. Divided into two sections, the first is filled with sofas and a stage up front with. The sofas can be enclosed with curtains, reminiscent of the BJ bars in Bangkok but a lot nicer / roomier / comfy. Beer was 80baht, tequila 150 making it quite pricey in Udon. There’s another, much larger area to the left were I think girls can sing karaoke – I’ve also heard the waitresses are topless. Unfortunately, my company wasn’t the type to allow me to check it out but I might head back there. Thai music.

2. Wolverine a-go-go

Wolverine a-go-go is large, Pattaya style. Aside from the music (hip-hop, top 50), the similarities stop there. The women aren’t as good looking and though there is an upstairs, the layout of the place doesn’t encourage naughty business on premises. About 50/50 mix farang and Thai. Drinks were a reasonable 70-80 baht for a large beer. Best bet to get there before 10pm if you want a choice in women. The staff is friendly and while not all speak English, Thai language skills not necessary (but helpful if you want to chat with a woman).

He went on to make observations about the following that I will not copy here — please refer to his site if you are curious:

3. Day and Night bar complex

4. Nutty Park bar complex

5. Hightech Night Plaza

His list actually went to #8, but two places were represented by name only — that is, no description about them; and the final spot was not a discussion of any specific bar whatsoever.

Another November 20, 2010, post titled Udon Thani A-Go-Go Report added a little more:

#1 is U-Want a-go-go / karaoke, between the Udon Thani hotel and F1 disco (discos are called “teks” in Udon, in case someone looks at you strangely). #2 is Wolverine a-go-go, Vietnam era a-go-go.

U-Want seemed to be predominately Thai. Thai language skills may not be mandatory, but I didn’t test English with the girls since I was with company. If it’s something different you’re looking for, I’d highly recommend at least a quick stop. Upon entering, there were 3-4 girls sitting in the front. You then enter an area with sofas, a stage up front with (this was Friday) 2 girls dancing and 1 waiting to dance. Thai music.

Wolverine a-go-go is located next to a “boy bar” or a-go-go, not sure since it’s not on my radar (but may be for others). The a-go-go is huge, Pattaya style. There were 8-10 women working Friday night, all of whom danced with a good amount of energy – better on average than other a-go-gos. There were maybe 1-2 that I might have taken an interest in, had I not drank so much (and if I hadn’t, maybe 0-1). Hip-hop, Top 50 type music.

Having experienced a Friday night, I’d place it ahead of Chiang Mai for a-go-gos. There’s less women, but on average better looking and more playful.

I hope the owner’s silence after just five months of posting is not an indication that he is having flak from any other website, or even bar owners.

The topic of Udon Thani “go go bars” comes up in a few forums, but those areas are generally reserved for forum membership access. There are even a couple of websites like that.

If I was living in the Udon Thani, I would be able to give a thorough review myself of even Thai “go go bars,” for my Thai wife loves going out, and between her and her friends, I would have broad (albeit well-behaved) experience of the scene.
