What exist are generalizations — that is, population estimates. And not necessarily too recent ones, at that.

For instance: WolframAlpha.com yields a 2004 estimate that the population of Udon Thani City is 247,231 people, making the city the fourth largest in the country. This figure is the one you would find at GeoNames, and seems to have some general currency.

Wikipedia, on the other hand, claims the city has a population of 255,243, and qualifies that figure with an April 2011 date, but does not cite a reference basis for that figure. However, before seeing that total, I first noted under the section Location this statement: The province of Udon Thani has a population of 1,467.200 (WolframAlpha rounds it to 1,467 million), the city alone 500.000. So where did that half-million figure come from? Note that the Wikipedia provincial estimate closely mirrors the 1,467,158 cited for a census taken in 2000 and published on the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific website. That same UNESCAP webpage indicates a provincial estimate for December 31, 2001, as 1,526,600.

Other websites reference an estimation date of April 1, 2000, for the city. For instance, City Population quotes the figure 222,425.

I saw one province estimate that was supposed to be circa 1993 (1,398,991 people).
