Thailand’s universities have more distinction than I think most people in the West might expect, and their ties with other universities are surprisingly extensive. For instance, I discovered that the Udon Thani Rajabhat University is an “International Partner” with Vancouver Island University, a university not too very far from where I currently live in western Canada — note:
Udon Thani Rajabhat University is an institution very similar to VIU, offering a range of undergraduate programs including business. Through a partnership with VIU, Udon Thani is planning to offer our Bachelor of Business Administration degree. VIU Faculty will teach some courses each year at the Udon Thani campus in Thailand.
Now, in reference to the Udon Thani Rajabhat University‘s international stature:
The Fifth International Conference on Science, Mathematics and Technology Education was held in Udon Thani, Thailand in January, 2008. The theme of the conference was ‘Science Mathematics and Technology Education: Beyond Cultural Boundaries’ and it was organised jointly by the national Key Centre for School Science and Mathematics, Curtin University of Technology, Australia and the Udon Thani Rajabhat University, Thailand.
The conference provided an intellectually challenging and culturally enriching experience for science, mathematics and technology teachers, teacher educators, researchers and administrators from primary, secondary and tertiary education from around the world. Over 120 participants from 15 countries had an opportunity to interact and exchange innovative ideas, research findings and practical implications in the traditional fields of science, mathematics and technology as well as new areas of international significance related to conference theme.
These proceedings are a result of the conference. All papers contained in the proceedings were presented at the conference and consequently submitted to a reviewing process. Each paper was reviewed by at least two referees.
This conference is now providing a supportive environment, particularly for early-career researchers, a number of who presented papers and have papers in these proceedings. The papers have been organised alphabetically.
If you refer to Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, you will find that quite a number of the papers collected in that document are authored by Udon Thani Rajabhat University teachers and researchers (the collection of papers is from here, currently available on the website of Australia’s Curtin University‘s Science & Mathematics Education Centre).

This post was originally begun on October 28, 2011, but I am doing an edit today, December 27, 2011. Unfortunately, due to the disruption this final day of the long Christmas weekend is resulting in for me, I find that I must curtail further work on the post. Perhaps I will manage a revisit to the subject of the University when time is more permissive.
