udon thani english schools
If we go back to February 7, 2010, someone made their only post to the UdonMap forum with the question: Schools for my kids?
We have wild plan to come over to Udon and set up our business, and the idea is to bring our two sons (11 and 16 years old); they both dont speak thai…….
Are there any international schools, or schools where lessons are also given in english, available in Udon Thani? If so, any idea on costs?
Any advise is helpfull here…..
regards
Martin
You can read the responses for yourself, but the gist is that Udon Thani does not have any schools where “school kids” can be taught their subject matter entirely in English.
More recently (June 27, 2011), another forum member with the qualifications to teach — and the fervour to involve himself in doing so — posed this question: New English school in Udon – what do you think? Again, check out the responses for yourself to get some grasp of the local situation from the point of view of Expats living in Udon Thani.
Of course, the term “school” can entail many things. Take Nongsamrong English & Computer Center, for instance. As well as other services, the English language training currently advertised under Services is as follows:
COURSES
There are several of courses available. These courses are designed to individual requirements and their abilities.

And then there is a school such as RISOL (Ratchada International School of Languages):
Why attend Ratchada International School of Languages and not the other schools in Udonthani? Here are some reasons.
Our school is approved by the Ministry of Education.
Our teaching staff are qualified professionals with years of experience in teaching English conversation and grammar. We understand the necessity in providing complete learning experiences which are fun and educational. Our lessons are custom designed to suit each student’s preference.
RISOL is not an ordinary school. Our lessons are activity-based which encourage students to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing. By making learning fun, the students feel at ease and enjoy the classes. After classes, students can relax and swim in the swimming pool, play some tennis, basketball or just take a walk and enjoy the landscape.
For the kids, learning at RISOL is the best place to start your children to learn a second language. Especially, now that Thailand is preparing for Asean, learning English is more important than ever. At RISOL the environment is safe and entertaining for children of all ages.
Our schedules are flexible and we are opened 7 days a week. Our prices are competitive but our extra’s cannot be compared.
So many of the places offering English language schooling do not have a website. One such is Be Ez English School. It apparently has an account of Facebook that is essentially useless (as of the date of this post), apart from providing the school address. And I also located a virtually neglected blog that must be affiliated with the school.
A similar situation exists with a school called Kru Tee Kru Nong English School. It is mentioned (address only) on foursquare, and it also has an account on Facebook that isn’t going to be of much use to anyone who knows little Thai.
Most smaller businesses offering English instruction do not even have this much Web presence — unless it’s all in Thai. That would seem to be very self-defeating — i.e., if a business proclaiming English instruction does not have enough of a foundation in the English language to do aught else but advertise itself with an all-Thai website.
Some good help concerning available English-language training in the Udon Thani area is available at Steve Graham’s Steve’s English Zone. He taught English at Udon Thani Rajabhat University for a number of years. The University has English instruction right up to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) level.
For kids, though, perhaps the most prestigious school is Don Bosco School:
Don Bosco School, Udonthani, is a government-subsidized private school, owned by the Salesians of St.John Bosco (SDB), a Catholic religious order. The school was founded in Udonthani in 1957. Don Bosco now serves over 2,500 girls and boys from kindergarten (3-year-olds) to Upper Secondary level (18-year-olds). The staff include 3 Salesian priests and 130 teachers.
Programs
The school offers the common programs of the Ministry of Education with an optional special program in which students have additional classes of English and Chinese, taught by qualified native speakers.
School Terms
The first semester is from the middle of May till the end of September and the second semester from the last week of October till the first week of March.
The school also offers 2 optional short summer courses, one in March and one in April. These optional summer courses admit also students of other schools.
Year 10-12 also have the compulsory 1-month summer term, from 16th April to 15th May.
Udon Recommended suggests that Don Bosco School is one of the top two schools of its kind in Udon Thani. The other is probably the all-girls’ school St. Mary’s…whose website is unfortunately all-Thai.
Other places that teach English include Let’s Talk International Language Institute:

Teaching jobs can be found at a website called Ajarn.com, and one opportunity mentioned a school I do not recall hearing about before:
I-Genius English Institute, which offers students a variety of courses under its unique learning system “Buffet English” has opened a new branch at Central Udon. This comes after having established two successful branches at Central Ladprao and Seacon Square in Bangkok. The new school is now recruiting part-time fun-loving, energetic English teachers for a number of classes such as conversation, grammar, writing, and preparation for TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS.
The school website (all-Thai) is here, and it gives the location to the Bangkok location; but I can find no mention of a “Central Udon” branch.
A school that has often interested me is American University Alumni Language Center (AUA). It is not their English-language instruction, however, that has my interest. Rather, I have considered applying for a Study Visa in order to have an extended stay in Thailand (Udon Thani) to try and learn some Thai. Attending for a mere couple hours a day, four or five days a week, seemed like a dream come true for someone looking for an extended stay in Udon Thani. However, judging by this recent UdonMap forum thread, AUA no longer seems to have the weight to result in such a Visa: Education Visa.
Two final mentions about English-language schools before I close today’s post:
Since my time in Udon Thani slowly comes to an end it is time for a final recap. I already told you more … Students learn to make posters which show COPIES of marketing statements of different companies – that’s how Business English is taught. 7.) Most teachers at … Teachers in private schools or high schools receive ‘teacher certificates’ so they can stay in Thailand for up to two years without being bothered to leave the country every now and then.
