According to Study in Thailand.org:
In Thai higher academic education, you find public and private institutions. Both need accreditation by the Royal Ministry of Education to award academic degrees. In both areas, you find universities and colleges. These term are not used consistently as a description for the level of education.
There are universities, often private ones, that only offer undergraduate programs. Then, there are colleges within universities, for instance offering undergraduate and continuing education. Other 4-year colleges are private institutions and offer undergraduate studies. Besides that, there are 2-year colleges as well offering vocational education. Such colleges are not listed below.
As one might expect in Thailand, all public and private universities and colleges offer programs conducted in Thai language. Only some of them offer higher education conducted in other languages in English programs and Chinese programs. Programs in other languages, such as German, are not offered until present day. Since very few programs are conducted in Chinese, the terms ‘international program’ and ‘English program’ are used synonymously. Similarly, an ‘international university’ or ‘international college’ are not hints to international cross-border institutions. These terms just point to Thai institutions offering at least one program conducted in a language other than Thai. Besides Chinese (Mandarin) and English, there are no other languages in which lecturers are conducted over the whole program.
Over the past few years, it apparently became fashionable to offer an international program. Besides gaining ‘face’ for the perceived professionalism of an international program, the widely accepted higher tuition fee might be the real reason. In the menu bar on the left, you find those universities and 4-year colleges offering academic degree studies in either English or Chinese (Mandarin) language. From 387 international programs in 2002, the number shot up to 844 in 2006. In four years, the number more than doubled.
International education in Thailand is an important factor for the economy. Not taking into account international schools, universities with these international programs generated THB 58.2 billion in revenue from them in 2007, up from THB 52.6 billion and THB 40.8 billion in 2006 and 2005 respectively, according to the Thai Commission on Higher Education’s Bureau of International Cooperation Strategy.
The international programs in Thailand cover almost all fields of studies. That doesn’t make it easier for you to find the best program, however, since many programs come along with fashionable names but conventional content. As it is for studies in any country other than your own, you need to look behind the curtains before making your decision.
The following universities and colleges marked in bold offer an international program.
As classified on that site, Udonthani Rajabhat University is listed in the roster of Public higher education institutes — it is #31 in that list, and its name is not bolded.
I expect, then, that this indicates that none of its programmes are conducted in a language other than Thai.
Elsewhere on another page of that same site, a list was provided of the Webometrics Thailand university ranking July 2010. As you might suppose, “Webometrics” has to do with the Internet; and in simplest terms, it is a ranking of the institutions presence on the Web.
Since 2004, the Ranking Web is published twice a year (January and July), covering more than 20,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. We intend to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities. If the web performance of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic excellence, university authorities should reconsider their web policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications.
Udonthani Rajabhat University ranked #82 amongst Thai institutions, and #6,217 as a World ranking.
I haven’t a clue if that is significant or unremarkable.
Udon Thani Rajabhat University is one of the oldest community universities in the northeast of Thailand. It was established on November 1, 1923 and offers various programs of study for all levels. Among these are associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees as well as post-graduate diplomas in three major areas : education, science and arts.

The philosopy of this university is:
- To provide general academic and professional education.
- To conduct research.
- To offer academic services to society.
- To improve, transfer and develop technology.
- To preserve art and culture.
- To produce teachers and promote teachers’ academic status.
If you referred to either of the Web pages listing Udon Thani Rajabhat University, you would surely have noticed how very many of these institutions have the name “Rajabhat” in their title.
Under Wikipedia’s entry for Rajabhat University system:
The Rajabhat Universities compose one of the university systems in Thailand. They were formerly called Rajabhat Institutes, and originally formed the teachers college system. A teachers’ college is “a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers.“
That’s a lot of institutions teaching a Heck of a lot of students just to be teachers…if that’s indeed the case!
LinkedIn’s profile on Udon Thani Rajabhat University:
Udon Thani Rajabhat University (UDRU) is known as one of the fast growing Thai universities with more than 22,000 students, 478 teaching staff members and 310 supporting staff members. UDRU is a university where international and local knowledge meet to empower the community and the region. From its origin as a teacher education institute, UDRU maintains its specialization in teaching and learning fields as it continues to successfully expand its specialties in fields other than education.
UDRU hosts several cooperation and collaboration projects with the community, both public and private sectors. With international cooperation, there are several programs at the bi-lateral and multi-lateral level on many fields.
UDRU has participated in the Public Sector Management Quality Award (PMQA) since the program was initiated in 2005 and has been ranked among top ten higher education institutes of Thailand for four years: PMQA program 1st placed in 2005, 6th in 2006, 9th in 2007, and 3rd in 2008.
UDRU is located in the heart of the Udon Thani City, only 50 kms from Nong Khai and Laos PDR, and one hour from Bangkok by plane. It is a modern city where most visitors find it is convenient to fit in, but still seasoned by the local charms. Udon Thani offers a unique glimpse of pre-historic civilizations including those of Ban Chiang, and the biological diversity that makes up Udon Thani are within the reach.
Ahh! “UDRU maintains its specialization in teaching and learning fields as it continues to successfully expand its specialties in fields other than education.”
Okay, then…it’s not ALL about producing teachers.
The Udonmap forum had an interesting thread a year ago on Learning English at Udon Thani Rajabhat University.
A tad discouraging to read, I must say.
An article by Steve Graham opened that Udonmap forum thread. Here is another form him three years ago titled Govt funds training for secondary school teachers.
Footnoting that article was this: Steven Graham is an English language teacher at the Language Center, Udon Thani Rajabhat University in northeast Thailand.
I stumbled across a Webpage of one of the University’s English teachers, Merrill Hartman. Or at least, he may still be teaching there — he only indicated that he’d be doing so until the Fall of 2011 “if everything works out.” Maybe it did not.
Someone else affiliated with the university has a blog site devoted to Rajabhat University Research. Is JamesSearsSite.com actually that of Arthur Eugene Sears?
