udonthani retired

As I sit here today during a November 10/2010 edit of this post, I wonder now more than ever if I will ever be “Udonthani Retired.” I will very soon be Retired, but I am far from being in a position to do it in Udon Thani. It is not helping that I am now five days into post-surgery that saw my left quadriceps tendon reattached to my patella (knee cap) from which it had pulled clean off. That mishap occurred on the afternoon of November 1st. Earlier that day, I had committed myself to Retirement by sending my Resignation via E-mail to my supervisor, and had booked off the period of November 1-23 in order to use up all of my remaining Vacation Leave (I have not been to work since August 31).

November 24 was to be my Retirement date, with a Pension of just over $1,800 per month as my reward for a bit over 20 years of service.

Now I need to get my situation reviewed and my Vacation Leave overturned — I qualify for Sick Leave. My leg is immobilized in a straight-leg posture, and I was told by my surgeon I am to remain so for three months. If the tendon has successfully reattached, then the process of rehabilitation of the knee begins.

I am technically entitled to have a good part of this time as paid Sick Leave — if I was still working each day, it would not now be possible. Just because I happened to be on Vacation Leave, and had submitted my Resignation with intent to Retire should not bar me from the same benefits I would otherwise have been entitled.

We will see.

A young Canadian man by the name of John Koch-Schulte spent a considerable amount of time in Thailand working on a thesis he titled Planning for International Retirement Migration and Expats:  a case study of Udon Thani, Thailand. He finally published it in very early 2008, and it is still available here on a University of Manitoba Website. It’s also available here, should that link ever fail.

I have since gotten to know John and his wife, Koong, or Goong; and in fact, the two of them joined up with my wife and I, plus another couple, for some drinks in a bar just two days prior to my accident.

At any rate, John’s work is worth at least a look.

I still buy lottery tickets, so maybe my miracle will arrive via that means…and I can write first-hand of what it is like to be Retired in Udon Thani.
