I’ve mentioned that my wife is the proud new owner/Director of a small Thai restaurant called Pattaya Thai Restaurant here in British Columbia, Canada. I don’t know how long she’ll keep it — she’s been the legal owner now for just under two months.
But it’s always sort of interested me just how varied the names of local Thai restaurants are.
I imagine that’s how it is anywhere.
For instance, Thai Esarn. I’m picking it — the name — for no particular reason.
There’s a Thai Esarn Restaurant in a place called Baulkham Hills, not too very far from Sydney, Australia. The reviews are pretty good, and I find that encouraging to see.
Reversing the name a bit to esarn thai restaurant, and you’ll find such a place in Houston, Texas — and again, darn good reviews.
London (England) has an Esarn Kheaw Thai Restaurant that also has mainly good reviews (more here).
I wish I could take my wife to try ‘em all!
Anecdotally, my HR co-workers went out today for Thai food to a place called Thai Basil — the outing was in honour of one of our number who is about to embark on nine months of Parental Leave. But I didn’t go. As I explained when asked, it would make me feel a little akin to cheating on my wife. There she is, trying to run her little restaurant, and putting so much effort into it…and I’m out eating in other Thai restaurants?
No. I can’t do it.
I should explain that Pattaya Thai Restaurant is about twice the drive that Green Basil is from where we work. Just getting there and back would likely take more than the half-hour our lunch break is supposed to be.
Anyway, when the others got back, a few of them suggested that maybe next time we could try and include the Pattaya Thai Restaurant by phoning in our order ahead of time so that we could at least avoid the lost time of just sitting there and waiting for our orders.
That would at least minimize the penalty of the long drive.
It would be really nice if they followed through and tried doing this one day — Jack could sure use the custom, I know!
