Isarn in Islington is a traditional Thai restaurant specialising in Thai curries.
There is a good varied menu wich you can view by clicking below which offers a full choice of Thai dishes. Isarn’s menu is built around familiar salads, stir-fries & curries of different colours, but a modicum of originality is injected by the likes of papaya spring rolls, char-grilled swordfish with lemongrass, mint & peanut salsa & fried chicken with green mango & chilli jam. Crossover desserts pitch strawberry Champagne jelly alongside sticky black rice. During the day, cut-price khantok set lunches (from £6.90), rice & noodles provide cheap eats. To go with the food, there are well selected, Thai-friendly wines; otherwise, try one of the exotic, fruity thirst-quenchers (watermelon juice or lychee iced tea, say).
There is a small yard at the rear which is nicely lit with fairy lights.
Columnist Charles Campion had this to say on August 27/2010:
ISARN 119 Upper Street, N1 (020 7424 5153, isarn.co.uk) A modernist, elegant and chic Thai restaurant with a vibe that is more cocktail bar than flung-together noodle dish. There are some interesting and less obvious dishes on the menu but also old staples such as crispy duck in pancakes. Not cheap.

Finally, a November 10/2008 review by Time Out:
Slinky, contemporary decor, with dark wood and oversized lampshades, gives Isarn a polished, expensive image, but the menu is surprisingly wallet-friendly. Set lunches, which come in a bento box, are good value, and include a selection of spring rolls or fish cakes, curry, rice and fruit. Don’t expect authentic Thai fieriness or superb cooking, but do sample some of the more unusual dishes, along with stalwarts like curries and pad thai – all stylishly presented. Among the starters, betel leaf wraps with crispy duck and pomelo are a must-try, as are the traditional Thai desserts, which rarely appear on restaurant menus. Delicate coconut-cream pudding with taro and lotus seed comes wrapped in a hand-shaped pandan leaf case. Less sweet western choices include an enjoyable dense lemon cheesecake topped with strawberry ice-cream. Isarn’s narrow dining room is often packed with twenty- and thirtysomethings, probably due to its prime location on Upper Street and the reasonable prices – which also help excuse the otherwise average food. Still, this remains a cut above several local establishments. In summer, try to get a table in the small rear courtyard.
