There is an article I’ve referred to before that is attributed to an American by the name of Jim Styers, and which ties in rather nicely with this subject. It’s called Real Estate In Thailand: A 12 Day Overland Exploration Of Issan, NE Thailand, and is probably at least three years old by now. However, it’s an interesting read, and gives some references that may be helpful to anyone interested in a home in Isaan. The article is available here and here.
I’ve just finished reading what is currently a two-page forum thread on Udonmap titled Retire in Issan? It was begun in June/2010, and gives a good perspective on how some Expats — and some Expat-’wannabes’ — are positioned concerning Retiring to this area.
I’m considering making my own contribution to it.
And although the question isn’t really answered by this Brit in his short post titled why retire in issan north east Thailand, you’ll get the clear drift; and there are links to other relevant sources of information.

Finally, the following video is a reminder of what many of us in the West still have to deal with. For myself, at some point in the reasonably near future, I’ll have to get involved in the selling of the house my wife and I share with my brother here in Canada. I’m going to Retire on November 24 of this year on a very small Pension. My wife has some aspirations in the Thai restaurant field. Since I cannot yet say where any of this will take us, I’ll not speculate on that here and now.
I guess I’ve always held out for wild luck and miracles, and that doesn’t seem to be changing!
