udon thani motels

I am unsure if there even are motels in Asia. The concept developed in America in the mid-1920s as a place for long-distance motorists traveling the highways to have access to roadside accommodation in rural settings, unlike hotels which tend to exist primarily in and around cities. Thais may sometimes bundle up the family — often the extended family — and go on a trip, but they do not tour the highways in the sense that was common in North America in the motor hotel heyday.

I have seen the term ‘motel’ used to refer to a lodging in Thailand, and even in Udon Thani, but without a few photos of the structure, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the description. One example is from the blog NotYourOrdinaryTour. Twice the author refers to the accommodation he and two others had in Udon Thani City as a motel — to wit: We reached Udon Thani about 10.30pm and check in to a motel opposite the Udon Thani bus terminal.

Since I do not have the luxury of being in Udon Thani, I have no idea what may be located at that spot. Is there truly a motel there…or was the author simply using the term loosely, as I suspect?

Another example was the following anonymous photo contained in an article on Lao girls lured into child-sex trade in Udon from early last year.

TWO-STAR ROOMS: The entrance to a rundown motel.

TWO-STAR ROOMS: The entrance to a rundown motel.

It is not possible for me to tell where in Udon Thani this place is, let alone if it truly qualifies to be labeled a motel. Is it merely another loose application of the term?

Another example I found referred to a place in Phuket, and not Udon Thani. But I wanted to point this one out because it allows me to decry the extremely sloppy use of a practice known as ‘article spinning.’ There are two common ways in which people are making money from websites these days. One is by using software that automates the stocking of websites with content, pulling articles from all over the web and changing the structure of the articles so that the search engines like Google deem the articles to be original. Set up several thousand such sites with free advertisement revenue, and even if the sites average pennies a day, it mounts up over time. Another is to take an article and use article-spinning software that will basically translate it into one or more other languages, and then re-translate it back into English. At that point it has been so modified, it reads like an entirely different article and comes across as something unique to search engines. But people who do this often are extremely sloppy about the result, and the article can be essentially meaningless.

I now want to point to an example using the word ‘motel’ that has been re-worked in this fashion. I will quote the article title, and then the paragraph with the word ‘motel’ in it. Note how the identical article has been re-worked to give it the effect of being unique from the other versions. You have likely come across websites and articles like this before, and wondered how somebody’s English could be so atrocious. That was not the case — it was not someone writing in English whose native language was something else. It was an example of article spinning.

From Udon Thani we flew to Pattaya and stayed at the Areca Live Motel. We were there for 7 days. Rented a motorbike while there and traveled all on top of Phuket. Of routine we had to secure some cashews seasoned past distinctive spices. Planned to bear them house but of routine they didn’t institute it! Took the scooter to Patong. I sometimes use articles as a resource for my own posts, but there have been occasions when the text was so twisted that it was impossible to understand. I can re-work an article if the content makes sufficient sense, but I have come across some where this was impossible. The piece had become unrecognizable as communicating anything; and I had no idea where to begin to unravel what was originally expressed at the time it was first composed.

Anyway, that’s my peeve for today.
