It is actually called the Karin Hotel, but not everyone makes that correct distinction.
I believe I have stayed there three times, but not since 2005. My only complaint was that of my own ignorance of Udon Thani itself. When I first stayed at the Karin in 2003, I had never been to Udon Thani before, and consequently I had no idea where I was within the City. But since I also had no idea of anything at all in Udon Thani — for instance, I never knew the Charoensri Complex existed, nor was I to learn of the so-called ‘Farang Alley’ until 2005 — I had no idea which direction to go in order to see anything or to enjoy myself. In that sense, the Karin felt isolated to me. However, I felt no better when I was relocated to the Siri Grand by the same Thai friends who had booked me into the Karin.
From what I remember of the Karin Hotel, it was to me a decent place to stay. I liked it.
Alas, though, I see from reviews in TripAdvisor that have been made recently, the Hotel may be suffering from some neglect. I have no recollection of any mosquito problem, and I never saw a cockroach or bed bug there. Cleanliness was no issue, either.
Anytime thereafter when I used to be passing by and saw the Hotel sign at the entranceway — the drive-way was fairly long — I felt some nostalgia.
As I recall, there was a small booth along the median of the drive-way where a security guard was stationed, although I don’t really know why. I don’t recall that we had to report in anytime I was a passenger in a vehicle, and I certainly never did as a pedestrian when out for a stroll. Perhaps he was mostly for show.
I sincerely do hope that the Hotel is not being neglected. I still feel very fondly towards it.
