Udon Thani VFW

Established 08 January 1972, AFTN Memorial VFW Post 10249 in Udorn, Thailand, is named in memory of nine airmen killed on duty when a battle-damaged RF-4C Phantom aircraft crashed into the Armed Forces Thailand Network (AFTN) Udorn Radio-TV Station on 10 April 1970.

You should find all you need to know at the above link, including a more detailed description of the tragic incident that took the lives of the nine service men. Note: not all nine who died were in the plane.

The UdonMap forum has some VFW members. There is a six-page thread begun March 11, 2006, devoted to the VFW’s use for announcements and such: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The link for the newsletter mentioned in the inaugural post on that thread is no longer valid, so I suppose the newsletter must be no more. Or maybe a subsequent updated link is listed later on in that six-page thread.

There is a website for Veterans of Foreign Wars District 5 that displays a map of Thailand along with Cambodia, so I am concluding that those two countries compose District 5. I noticed that when the website link for Udorn_Thani is clicked, a visitor is taken to a mirror site of the one I introduced at the start of this post. My original link is udonvfw10249.org/, whereas this alternate link is vfw10249.org/. There may be no difference, apart from the two sets of emblems on the home page not morphing like they do on my original link — they are static and thus do not change in the second link.

VFW District 5 is of course part of the active (current) 26-post VFW Provisional Department of Pacific Areas.

As a June 20 (2012) post edit, here are some Udon Thani VFW-related references that may interest or entertain you:

The base also caused America to set up a Consulate in Udon (sadly closed in 1995) and a VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) post. The general impression given to the outside world was that Udon Thani was a regional hub with

I realize that many of the above occurrences are extremely marginal where relevance to the topic at hand is concerned, but the intent was just to make apparent how widespread the influence of “Udorn” has been to those who served there as part of the American forces during the Vietnam War era.

About Garnet Barcelo

I am a Canadian retiree, married to an Isaan (Thailand) lady whom I met in Udon Thani City in January 2003. We married in late May 2005. And she has been with me here in Canada since May 2006. Her two sons joined us in September 2008. Ever since that first visit to Thailand in 2003, my dream has been to somehow spend most of my retired life over there with her, but the financial reality of my retired life is not making that possible. It will take a miracle to get this dream to come true.
