Passing Time in Nong Soong Village – 2005

I again apologize for the poor quality of these videos of mine from this period. They have gone through changes of format at least four different times, and have suffered accordingly.
The first couple of minutes just surveys the surroundings of my wife Jack’s family home in the village during a rainstorm. At one point, you can see part of a Buddhist temple complex beyond the tops of the trees.
Then we move on to the main highway that one would take to go in to Udon Thani, approximately a 15-minute drive away. This video session lasts something over five minutes. There was a small karaoke-style business right there that my wife and her friends used to enjoy spending time at, but I believe she said that it has since closed. Jack’s friends who were with us during this sequence included the sassy Aum and long-time family friend, Daisha.
The scene then shifts again, this time back to Jack’s home. A small group had gathered to enjoy some drinks and food. The woman the camera has first fixed upon is someone Jack always refers to as her ‘Sister/Cousin.’ And of course, dear Daisha is there, too.
The final scene is back upstairs in the house to record the surroundings outside during another rainstorm, and again that temple compound for the monks is visible over the trees.
Simple things, but I miss them so very much these long years later.
Although I name the village Nong Soong, it is variously named as Noong Soong, Nun Song, Nong Song, and so forth. It is near where the Ramasun Station was, an American military base active during the Viet Nam War. Jack’s father in fact was a driver of some description for this place, she has told me. He would often be able to bring home foodstuffs and other things that the family probably would never have.
He was to die in bed unexpectedly one night beside his wife, Jack’s mother. This would likely have been in the mid-1980s. Jack was only a girl at the time, and seems to have carried over the fear that the same thing might happen to me — anytime I make odd noises in my sleep, she has this fear surface in alarming fashion.
By the way, her father’s ashes are within that temple compound I referred to that is not too very far from Jack’s home.
