Udon Thani has a variety of karaoke bars, beer bars, and Western bars. The area between Central Plaza and the railroad station houses some of these. Bar names and ownership are fluid, particularly for Western bars.
Many of the hotels in town have lively nightlife with restaurants and music.
Udon Thani has a wide variety of Karaoke bars, go-go bars, nightclubs and English and American styled pubs. The area around the Charoen Shopping Complex (locally called Komplek) houses the majority of these.
Dong Dea Moon. With the sea of motorbikes out the front, this a favourite with locals and has regular appearances by some big-name Thai folk acts.
Harmony Bar . Run by a Thai/Dutch female singer. A bar which sometimes has live music entertainment, and also serves food.
Irish Clock, . Authentic Irish pub in the middle of Udon. Two pool tables. Lodging also available.
Steve’s Bar. Run by an English ex-pat and his Thai wife, serving Western and Thai food as well as a selection of International beers and spirits. Just around the corner,
Tong’s Bar. Gay-friendly bar, draws Thais and foreigners, with cheesy Thai pop blaring from the speakers.
Beyond this, bars tend to open and close by the month, if not by the week. The club scene is fairly uni-dimensional with a generic crowd going to the 2 or 3 clubs in town. The best are housed in the basements of the Charoen Grand and Napalai hotels.
The giveaway that the preceding is an outdated piece of text is the mention of the Charoen Shopping Complex (i.e., the Charoensri Complex). It was revamped and renamed the CentralPlaza a few years ago.
For years, the website UdonMap.com was the best resource for almost anything relating to Udon Thani. In fact, if I had known of the website’s existence when I first went to Udon Thani in January 2003, I truly believe that my life today would be entirely different. I would have known of the existence of what was familiarly referred to as Farang Alley, and I would then not have relied upon the three Thai people who had appointed themselves as my guides and protectors.
The close association I had with one of those three Thais led to a relationship that resulted in marriage in 2005, and she has been with me here in Canada since 2006.
That likely would never have come to pass had I known about Farang Alley, and could have benefited from the contacts I would have made there.
Farang Alley is now gone — it was demolished. Places like the Udon Thani Day and Night Complex and Nutty Park have since come into being.
UdonMap.com‘s forum is still useful for learning about some of the drinking venues in Udon Thani, but the portion of the forum hosting those accounts (that is, Udon Thani Nightlife) is private — one must be a member of the forum to access it.
There are even non-English forums focusing on Udon Thani, but that’s not what this post is supposed to be about.
Of late, I seem to be reflecting at length upon “what might have been,” as it relates to my life. That definitely cannot be a good sign.
And that observation is perhaps where I shall end this post — I am growing too uncomfortable with these…remembrances.
