The Udon Theni Chamber of Commerce has a very informative Website, if you happen to read Thai. I tried checking out one of the photo-reports concerning the opening of a ‘Premium Outlet’ using Google Translate, but the result was basically gibberish.

It seems to me that the Chamber of Commerce is very active on behalf of Udon Thani — which makes sense, and is as it should be. The Commerce Chairman, Theera Tanglakmankhong, protested loudly when Thai Airways International announced last December that service to Udon Thani would be ceasing in April (2010) due to the losses such flights were costing the carrier. However, here it is September of 2010, and I see from the Udon Thani International Airport’s ever-updated Flight Status – Arrivals | Departures for today, there are still three flights happening. Who knows? Perhaps the Chamber had some sway.

Thai AirAsia will service new route Udon Thani – Phuket 4 flights weekly with Airbus 320 starting from December 21st, 2009. Tourists may travel from the South to the North-East in less than 2 hours.
Ticket price starts from 690 baht for any travel between 21 December 2009 – 30 October 2010.

You don’t mention if price is an issue, Bob, but I will take for granted that it may be.
As for what’s available in Udon Thani, the best listing I know of for accommodation is UdonMap — they currently cover 58 different places, if the claim is to be believed — I never counted them all to make sure.
However, if it’s the night life that you want to be close to and it is your intention to be walking, I have only personally had the experience of staying at one place in that area — the Top Mansion. But that was only for a night at a time — my wife and I were staying out of town, and we would book the Top Mansion when we overdid a night of it partying in town. In other words, I never had my belongings with me when I stayed there — you know, stuff to leave behind in the room while I was out doing anything. However, it claims to be secure, so probably it is. I haven’t been reading otherwise about it. The rates were certainly great.
The general consensus is that the beds there are a tad hard, and I certainly do recall that they were firm.
The only other places I ever stayed at that were right in Udon Thani City were always outlying from this area of town — it could be walked to, but it would have taken some time.
