udon thani online radio

From time to time, I’ve sought an online Udon Thani (City) radio station, but have never had good luck. Perhaps there are none that broadcast over the Web as well as over the air.

I thought I might be onto something with http://radiothailand.prd.go.th/udonthani/ – if you check out this site that’s in Thai, you’ll see a tuner at the right for FM 93.75. The tuner wasn’t active when I checked it out, for many Thai stations shut down for a period overnight, unlike most North American stations that run 24 hours a day. However, though the “station” may have a “home” in Udon Thani, it is really only a satellite station that’s actually based in Bangkok.

Note: EFM “Entertainment in Your Hand” is run by “new face” DJs who are celebrities, and plays popular and trendy music. The radio station also features entertainment news and events, including gossips, lifestyles and updates of celebrities, with year-round activities, allowing the audience to participate in the entertainment circle. EFM station is broadcasted via satellite which other than Bangkok and suburban areas, also covers 6 major cities including Chiang Mai (F.M. 98.0 MHz.), Chiang Rai (F.M. 95.75 MHz.), Pitsanulok (F.M. 94.25 MHz.), Udonthani (F.M. 93.75 MHz.), Nakorn Ratchaseema (F.M. 106.25 MHz.), and Songkhla (F.M. 90.5 MHz.), accounting for 80% of Thailand’s economic areas.

That’s not to say that there are no other online stations in Udon Thani that are original in content. One such may be Radio Thani MCOT Modern Radio. You’ll quickly note this caution:

And I’ve just gone to what is supposed to be the station’s actual Web site, and found this:

This account has been suspended.
Either the domain has been overused, or the reseller ran out of resources.

To be frank, it’s difficult to find any good Thai radio station on the Web. Overall, they don’t seem to be very generous with bandwidth. And unlike stations here in North America, Thai stations seem to be reluctant to air consecutive songs. Forget finding nine in a row, for example! You’ll get one song, followed by what seems like many minutes of chatter before another song.

I can’t stand stations in my own language that do that!

There is one radio station in Udon Thani that is off the air as of the military crackdown of the Red Shirt protesters. As you can read in this BBC report, the Udon Lovers community radio station has been shut down because the owner is an open Red Shirt who has now had to go into hiding.

Another report says that the owner is under arrest and in custody in Bangkok. Here, the station is called I Love Udon Radio.

The article is very revealing. I don’t think Thailand will ever be the same.

It’s a shame that the King is no longer the man of strength that he once was, for it seems that he has been too sickly in his old age to speak out or make an appearance through all of the turmoil. He might have succeeded in bringing calm if he had been able to intercede.

The following beautiful presentation is regretfully flawed in that it will not play the final half-minute of the song or the slide show, but it is so apparent how loved this man is by the Thai people.

Leaving the political situation and returning to radio talk, I found mention of a station called Mickey Radio FM 91.0 “located at Udonthani, Thailand.” I tried accessing the Broadcast Schedule, but the Website is obviously defective. I doubt the station has any Web play, however.

A recent post on Udonmap.com cited FM Udon as having a selection of stations, which it does appear to indeed have. I couldn’t get the three or so that included ‘Udon” in their station name title to work, however. Still, the other stations may be just as much “Udon.”

I’ve been focusing only upon Udon Thani online stations — there are, of course, a number of Thai online stations based in other parts of the Thai nation.
