Occasionally I will come across a rant — invariably by a concerned Farang — over how shoddily TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) promotes the Isaan region. This time, I thought, it looked like at least Udon Thani was getting some good recognition, for I happened upon a page on the TAT website announcing Udon Thani Events & Festivals. There were links for six categories, and each category link had a number beside it indicating how many events or festivals one would be able to read about if the link was clicked.
Foolish me! Of the four categories that I tried to find out more about, the page I was taken to invariably proclaimed: There is no result for this search..
Note: In playing around with the search criteria — and how many people would think to try this? — I changed the default ‘Up Coming’ that displays in the field ‘Sort by‘ to just about anything else, and then the hidden content revealed itself.
Oh, well. At least there are other sites — ThaiHotelsLinks.com has a page of Udon Thani Festivals and Events. Except that when one goes to the page, there are a mere two festivals listed…and the addresses of five golf courses. Golf courses are events, then? Shabby work, guys.
Another hotel website that I will not even bother to link to offered just one festival.
Yet a site like the KhonKaen.com forum has just today (I am doing an edit to this post on February 24, 2012) announced the Udon Thani Chess Club:
We meet every Saturday from 1-5pm at Nobi’s German restaurant in Udon Thani.
It’s opposite the Top Mansion and on the same street as the Irish Clock.
So, if ever you find yourself in Udon on a Saturday and fancy a game or two, please feel free to come and join us.
Players of all levels are welcome, and our more experienced players can coach new players and those who haven’t played for years.
And if you can beat or draw either of our resident grandmasters on your first visit, you get a free drink on the house!

I am only too happy to re-publish the announcement — if only TAT or some other Thai entity had sufficient enterprise to proclaim more traditional Thai events for Udon Thani or the Isaan!
The Wikipedia article for Udon Thani Province thought it important to mention just two Festivals.
Udon Recommended also mentions two festivals with posts that described them as of the year 2010.
This seems the way of it — no one can come up with more than one or two events or festivals in Udon Thani.
Want to know about when horse racing is happening? The new website Isaan The Magazine (Udon Thani & Isaan Guide) has an Events link that opens up to an actual monthly calendar — an excellent idea. Unfortunately, as I have alluded, all that is on offer for the month of this edit (February, 2012) or even next month are the Saturdays in which there is horse racing at “Intergamespark Udon Thani.” As I say, though, I believe the site is new, so let’s give it time to flesh out.
Maybe it is the same with Udon Thani Nightlife — clicking on its Events & Concerts link yields absolutely nothing whatsoever. Perhaps the site is still “birthing?”
A good source of reports upon current events is UdonMap’s Udon Thani News. It does not always showcase events favouring public participation, though — often, the “event” being featured is a news report.
I wish I lived in Udon Thani and was able to make this post a catalogue of the year’s festivals, but I live in far-off Canada.
