People actually do searches in Google and other search engines for some equivalent to an Udon Thani “Chamber of Commerce” style of business directory. Maybe one day businesses in Thailand will organize that well for the convenience of non-Thais…but I doubt I’ll live to see it.
Meantime, reliance will have to be placed upon the efforts of Westerner’s who create their own business directories of admittedly vested concerns, such as the excellent UdonMap.
Just look at the paucity of content in the categories of a Thai Visa Directory for Udon Thani — businesses cannot be bothered promoting themselves, for the main.
A search of the web will produce links purporting to present a business directory of Udon Thani, but invariably you will find that the listing is utterly bare. For instance, the Udon Thani page of this so-called Thailand Business Directory. To date, it has absolutely nothing for Udon Thani. Another is the Small Business Big World page for Udon Thani — lots and lots of categories, but none of my explorations found any of them harbouring an actual business. You would think that, surely, a Yellow Pages Directory for Udon Thani would be the place to go? The page has a HUGE list of categories…but I found nothing in any I sampled.
I did find myself very much surprised by a niche directory at a site called HappyCow. Specializing in being a “global directory” of “Vegetarian Restaurants & Health Food Stores,” its listing for Udon Thani actually yielded three businesses. Way to go, HappyCow!
A site called TradeBoss “Worldwide B2B Marketplace” currently has 14 listings for Udon Thani. I suspect it is the same 14 businesses that are listed at B2B.TradeHolding.
UdonMap is doubtless the best general directory there is for Udon Thani that is of use to a Farang. Now, Udon Thani does have a Chamber of Commerce, incidentally. However, whether there is a directory listed on the website, I am unable to say, for I do not read Thai. It certainly has a wealth of links to other Thai-only sites.
I am not complaining. No doubt if I bothered to learn Thai, I would find many resources that are at present unavailable to me simply because they are unrecognized by me. And that is my fault.
I would still rather be living somewhere in Udon Thani than anywhere else in the World that I know of.
