Udon Thani and Ban Chiang

I was taken to Ban Chiang shortly into my first visit to Thailand and Udon Thani in January 2003. The Ban Chiang visit was during my first six days to the country. However, I had no idea what the name of the place was, nor just where it was. Some Thai ladies had chosen it as one of the places that I as a tourist should see, and one of them was driving. I had only to sit in the car with them and enjoy the trip. And maybe a little beer.

All I can remember of it is that we did go into the museum, and I think maybe even a temple — I remember being introduced to the ‘fortune-telling’ assessment whereby a person takes a cup-like cylinder containing a bunch of long tooth-pick-like sticks, and carefully shakes them around in the container, allowing a few telling sticks to fall out. What I learned was that I seemed to be unusually clumsy at practicing this Buddhist rite. Either no sticks would separate from the cup; or if I got more intense about it, just about all of them would fly out. There was no sought after medium.

I fast disengaged myself from the embarrassing activity.

I also seem to recall something of the oft-mentioned archaeological pits on display. But not one photo was apparently taken during that visit. And not knowing what the place was, limited my apprehension of what the site was all about, giving me little reason to remember much of it at all.

It is unfortunate that I neither had a digital camera back then, nor the knowledge of what a blog was. I could have made an exhaustive post about the place, had my situation only been different.

One blogger gave Ban Chiang a small mention in a blog post published right at the end of last March that he titled Nong Khai to Udon Thani & Ban Chiang. However, his quarrel concerning the admission fee for Farangs seems to have much reduced his appreciation of the site. You can read a far more favorable and thorough account of it in a piece titled Ban Chiang Settlements and Culture.

An older blogger-post on ArtphotoasiA also treats Ban Chiang respectfully — from October 10, 2002: Udon Thani and Ban Chiang.

And from this past February 13 (2011), the blog My-Thai.org offers Ban Chiang — World Heritage. Note: this chap was not overwhelmed with the site, so the account is rather peripheral.

A few other mentions:

The Site is located at Ban Chiang, Amphoe Nong Han, 55 kilometers from the province on Highway No. 22 (Udon Thani-Sakon Nakon). Turn left at the 50-km marker to Highway No. 2225 and proceed for 6 kilometers.
