Whether the Province or the capital City, Udon Thani captured my heart when first I visited in January, 2003. Had I known of the online resource UdonMap, I doubt I would be married to the woman who is my wife today. As it was, I knew only a few Thais in Udon Thani, and knew nothing of what was then commonly referred to as “Farang Alley.” Had I been able to find that Farang enclave for beer-drinkers, then it is very likely I would have made a few Western (Farang) friends and learned the ropes, and not have needed to be so entirely reliant upon the daily attendance my Thai friends gave me. Nor would I have been so willingly dependent upon she in the group who was to become my main city guide, and who was to eventually capture my heart.
It was a matchmaking website that first brought me to Thailand, and Udon Thani. That matchmaking website — Siam Lady (http://www.siamlady.com) — has long since become inactive. However, it went from being a matchmaking site, to an incarnation or two bordering on the unsavoury. But it was founded in the year 2000 (March 20) with good intentions:
“Our goal is to introduce western men to ladies from Thailand (Siam) for the purpose of marriage.” “Personal ads of Thai lady friends seeking good men for marriage. No Bar Girls here. Includes discussion of marriage customs.“
Someone today still holds possession of the Domain name SiamLady.com until March 20, 2013.
Yes, that website was the reason I “discovered” Thailand. I went there to meet the young lady who was to be my match. And six days later…was the last time I was ever to see her. She had easily fleeced me, and ran off to Khon Kaen, leaving me with the handful of Thais who had known her, and were outraged by her deceit. They collectively resolved to ensure that I was not to come to any further harm in their country, and I found myself so lavishly cared for, that I could scarcely find myself alone and idle long enough to think about doing anything on my own.
Besides, Supranee (Jack) had become one of the group, and she became my local guide insofar as having a companion to take me to the sorts of places I wanted to visit — places where I could drink beer and watch lots of life around me.
And our closeness grew, building upon the many hours we spent together each and every day. Even when our other Thai friends came to take me somewhere in one of their cars, Jack was always a part of it.
Yet none of that bonding might have taken place had I known of “Farang Alley,” and thus had somewhere that I could have gone on my own. I would not have needed to be spending countless hours with dear Jack. Instead, I could have been with other Farangs, getting introduced to any number of Thai ladies.
All it would have taken for that to have happened is knowledge of the existence of UdonMap. But I was not to learn of the website until later that year, after I had returned in deep sadness to my home country of Canada.
When I think back to Jack as I knew her then, the woman with me today here in Canada seems almost someone else.
I wish I could have more of the Jack of old. But that would take relocating to Thailand, I realize. And this is something that presently cannot be. Although I am Retired now, she has business interests in a Thai restaurant in Vancouver with two partners that keeps her away from home for a dozen hours a day, and sometimes more. Also, her two sons joined us in September, 2008. Neither could speak English when they arrived here. But one is now 17, and in Grade XII; the other is 14, and in Grade IX. Jack wants them both to finish their high school here in Canada. They can then later decide what they want to do with their lives once they have that foundation, and Canadian Citizenship.
Jack wrote the test herself earlier this year — I am writing this in a post edit of March 26, 2012 — but she is convinced that she probably failed it. Although it has been more than a month, we have not gotten her results.
I have not been to Thailand since Jack and I married in Udon Thani on May 30, 2005.
I do not want to be where I am. I have not wanted to be here since I was a teen back in the 1960s. But it is going to take a financial miracle to change things.
Enough of the maudlin trend! Since I am not and can not be there, here are some selections of other websites that have had something to say recently about Udon Thani and Thailand:
