How a language of gestures came to be
American Sign Language has been around for a long time. But who invented it or or how did it come to be?
ASL’s European Origins
What we call American Sign Language actually has roots in Europe. One version of its history has it beginning in Italy. It is also known that in the 18th century, the Abbe De l’Epee of France developed an early form of sign language that contributed to American Sign Language.
There are at least 23 sign languages in Africa, according to Nobutaka Kamei in The Sign Languages of Africa (2004). Some have distributions that are completely independent of those of African spoken languages. At least 13 foreign sign languages, mainly from Europe and America, have been introduced to at least 27 African nations; some of the 23 sign languages documented by Kamei have originated with or been influenced by them.

ALEX THE ALLEY CAT
an avant-garde rock fantasy adventure love story of tragedy to triumph
Bali Lau Entertainment recently completed an imaginative HD original art aficionado musical feature production debuting at the Cannes Film Festival May 11th-21st, 2011.
Writer-director Tom Gunn stated, “I consider the ALEX THE ALLEY CAT movie a rock fantasy/reality adventure, as it contains a unique blend of assenting thoughts, with a hint of Thai political clarification, a rift of human demeanor, and a candid view of betrayal, lust, and greed weaved through a love story of tragedy to triumph.” World artist Shadawmon performs a tour-de-force in keeping a dramatic thread throughout the presentation, filmed on location in Southeast Asia. Cambodian born Yawapah Benchakhum co-stars as the beautiful Ms. Right, ‘Giup’, with Vietnam’s Thi Nhu Trang Doan from Hanoi as ‘Jin’.
The essence of this story is a fairly common occurrence for some foreigners seeking Asian wives, and who end up meeting less sincere ladies primarily interested in gleaning their money.
“It’s not the norm, as such, nor was it my intent to produce a film that besmirched Thai ladies; rather, to shed light on how some situations play out, blending an entertaining array of fantasy, human emotion, and reality conveyed through songs, narrative, live action, and visual effects.” The Alex the Alley Cat story is one of values, and the inevitable need for ethics, inasmuch as our values lead to our attitudes, which directly affect our behavior.
In the story, the main character Jah portrays the straight forward yet vulnerable aging American musician seeking true love, contrasted by his alter ego evil twin, the Alex The Alley Cat persona who in essence represents hordes of foreigners who come to Thailand intent on meeting young ladies in bars, yet have no clue to the history of this country, the culture, or the rationale behind the girls’ plights.
In recent years, a multi-billion dollar tourism business has emerged in Thailand, and at least part of the explanation the establishment is benefiting so remarkably is because of the vast accessibility to an abundance of poor young Thai women from Isan in effect coerced into prostitution by the political environment and economic circumstances. Young ladies come to the city bringing a wisp of hope to their families for sustenance, if she successfully finds a ‘good husband.’ Generally, this translates to an older foreign man.
“There are hundreds, if not thousands, of ex-Vietnam veterans who never went home, and married here, and are quite happy. In the story, the thread of the Vietnam vet with PTSD was tailored after a gunnery sergeant I met here from Alabama. He has a pretty fair income from his VA disability benefits – enough to support his Thai wife of many years, and her entire family, very well,” said Gunn.
“World news wires were buzzing this time last year surrounding the political turmoil on the streets of Bangkok. This is because the northern Isan Thai people (Red shirts) were overtaken by the elite ruling class Chinese-Thai (Yellow shirts), which created relentless social injustice and economic imbalance.
“Nevertheless, I, too, chose to make Thailand home for numerous reasons, as I brought in a complete complement of state-of-the-art HD film equipment, and set up an independent production company. Most people have no idea how much film production is going on from the international community. The Weinstein Brothers (The King’s Speech Oscar winner) opened major studios and sound stages in Bangkok recently, and Technicolor has state of the art post production facilities and film labs that serve much of Asia.
“The Alex The Alley Cat movie will initially be released on Amazon ‘downloads’ and the iTunes store in the US after its debut at the Cannes Independent Film Festival May 11th-21st, 2011, yet I believe there is a substantial global audience for the film, as it as has a rather cerebral theme, with philosophical overtones appealing to thinkers and art cult aficionados, who can grasp to the depth vs. earthiness of the story concept, interwoven with musical content and lyrics.
“Certainly, themes involving betrayal, lust, and greed are not limited to Thailand by any means; yet statistically, few are creating musical based avant-garde movie productions wherein the lyrics express the story-line to such a divisive topic.
“Hopefully, more independent filmmakers, with a variety of compelling stories and fascinating themes, will gain heightened exposure through the new digital distribution technology – (VOD) video-on-demand, web, IPTV, HDTV, and satellite-cable pay channels now available.
“The Alex The Alley Cat movie contains a myriad of fascinating scenarios and exotic locations filmed in Southeast Asia with state of the art (VFX) special visual effects. The film is partially based on a true story.”
A Limited Edition HD Home Theater DVD release is now available on www.paradisemoon.com (DVD & photo synopsis).
HD cinematographer, film producer, and composer, Tom Gunn has an esteemed record of honors and achievement in film, television, music production, and international communications, earning a 1989 Emmy Nomination for Best Editing for a Warner Bros/Hallmark Hall of Fame/Viacom production, and several Top 100 Billboard Picks as a writer-publisher.
What are some great historic temples to visit in Thailand?
You would have an answer a long time ago if you did a little “self help” by using a simple Google check. A Google check will ALSO give you directions on “how to get from ??? to ???” type questions.
Wouldn’t be better for you to ask for temples in or near the cities you will be visiting? Unless you intend to hunt down any temple suggestion you get.
I like the Phimai Wat. Located one hour from Korat. Bus from Mochit bus station can take you to Korat. But more tourists go to Ayudthaya.
Many travel guides on Thailand (which you can check out of a library for free) usually have sections on the “things to see and do” and history backgrounds.
