I have never been to Nong Khai, but the more I read and see of it in photos, the more I feel it to be a place I could be happy to live. Certainly my wife and her family have always enjoyed visiting the area.
I can not recollect if I have ever asked her whether or not she has tried to witness the famous Naga Fireballs, though. Living for over 30 years as she did in Nong Soong, near to Udon Thani, I cannot imagine that she never would have tried to attend that annual event.
Just today, I found a photo blog I had not before come across that is irregularly kept up by a French Expat now resident in Nong Khai who refers to himself as JPSIAM. The JP evidently represents “Jean-Pierre.” From what I can tell, he made the commitment to Retire to Nong Khai just this past July.
Perhaps now that he has Retired to the area after living in Thailand for three years, he will find time to post more regularly. He began Le Blog de JPSIAM en Thailande late in October, 2009; I hope he continues with it, and does not neglect the excellent photography characterizing his relatively few posts to date.
Something else I found today concerning Nong Khai was a page of some reviews of the Royal Mekong Nongkhai Hotel. I was surprised by the almost overwhelming negativity of the reports. If you’re curious, they’re here. I see much the same reviews here, too. The photos at that second site look very good, oddly enough. Possibly only complainers bothered to express themselves, and the contented customers simply weren’t motivated?
Still, if it’s only for a short stay…and there is a pool to at least sun by!
By the way, there’s a Webcam offering a street view that’s set up outside the Nong Khai Hotel Pantawee. The images only change every 30 seconds, so it doesn’t take too long to become a bit of a drag. But it’s still something novel initially.
I checked out a couple of realty sites for properties — as of this writing, I didn’t really see anything I could ever afford that I liked on the FBI site.
But I was surprised that newcomer isaan-house.com had the properties that they do.
If you know nothing at all of Nong Khai, then this tourist’s report — along with the great many photos following his article — should be an interesting occupation of your time.

I mentioned French JPSIAM’s blog early into this post. I also came across a photo blog on the site of Nong Khai Design, which is a company involved in both the designing and construction of buildings such as homes.
