Singapore & Isaan
For this post, I am going to profile two very different qualifiers for inclusion beneath the term “Isan Singapore.”
Isan Singapore I
Thanks to website Lonely Planet, I now know that there is an Isan Gallery in Singapore:
The home gallery of Percy Vatsaloo showcases intricately crafted and exquisitely beautiful clothing and other textiles made by tribal craftspeople of Isan in northeast Thailand. Visitors are welcome by appointment, and most of the items on display are also for sale. Percy works closely with the craftspeople themselves, and half of the sale price goes directly to them.
From the Isan Gallery website:
We work in quiet ways from the peace and tranquility of our Home Gallery away from the city. We are both collectors and dealers of beautiful artifacts from the Indo-Chinese Region. Since 1987, Percy Vatsaloo, who runs Isan Gallery has been traveling extensively across the Korat Plateau or Isan Region of North-Eastern Thailand to study and collect old textiles, lacquerware, basketry and silver from within Thailand and from neighbouring Laos, Cambodia and Burma.
Percy’s passion for things hand-made eventually got him involved in weaving. Since 1997 Percy started to realise his dream of creating his own silk fabrics. Today the thriving weaving studio in the outbacks of Isan produce contemporary works of arts in the form of one-of-a-kind “limited edition” silk shawls and wall hangings and other handwoven fabrics that are exclusive to Isan Gallery in Singapore.
The team of 35 weavers use age old techniques of Ikat, Supplementary and Tapestry Weaves on old-fashioned hand-looms to produce stunning Contemporary Works of Art. The use of handreeled silk results in a very supple fabric which is soft to the touch.
A Flickr member (“sleepydays”) uploaded a 37-piece photo-set of images taken over 2006 and 2007 in an album she called Signature Pieces, and offered this about Isan Gallery:
Isan Gallery is well-known among those “in-the-know” as an exclusive gallery for antique lacquerware, silver, textiles, designer shawls and accessories.
I am a personal fan of the designer Mr Percival Vasaloo, the owner of Isan Gallery, and his beautiful works.
She also listed another website, but it is no longer active: http://www.isangallery.jp/. At least her photos give a better impression of some of the Gallery’s products than does its own flashy official website — the images there are far too small in my browsers for me to appreciate them.
Isan Singapore II
A researcher by the name of Pattana Kitiarsa wrote a paper he titled Village Transnationalism: Transborder Identities among Thai-Isan Migrant Workers in Singapore (August 2006). This is its abstract:
Based on ethnographic fieldwork among Thai-Isan (the Northeastern Thai), male migrant workers in Singapore’s construction industry in 2004, I propose ‘village transnationalism’ as a conceptual model for understanding the transnationalization and globalization processes from below. Exclusively hailing from rural working-class and farming backgrounds, Thai-Isan migrant workers have redefined their transborder identities by relying on their limited cultural and symbolic capital from their home villages to survive the hardship working as ’3D workers on 3D jobs‘ in a foreign land. My primary aim is to engage with the current ‘transnational turn’ in the anthropology of border-crossing and international migration studies. It is argued that village transnationalism as an analytical as well as explanatory model could be applicable to some extents to other forms of contracted migrant workers (i.e., construction workers, domestic workers, and farm/plantation workers), especially in the intensively constricted and highly regulated contexts of Southeast Asian countries.
This is the opening paragraph — it better explains the context of “3D:”
Sorachai, 30, a male construction worker from Udon Thani, Northeastern Thailand, spoke on behalf of his fellow workers claiming: “You know what! Thai workers in Singapore all bear very heavy pressure.” With their average daily wage of 23SGD (14USD; 552THB), they have to handle bondage debts, funds which they borrow from relatives or private moneylenders to pay job placement agents in order to secure a job in Singapore’s construction industry, and also remit money to support their families back home. They also have to live with the harsh realities of Singapore, where they are often looked down upon as ‘3D-job workers’, with ‘3D’ referring to difficult, dirty, and dangerous jobs in international migration studies. They speak neither English nor Mandarin, and thus are not capable of communicating easily with employers and supervisors. They have to obey them fully as their life totally depends on them. They have no rights and no voice in their workplace even though their work could be very harmful to their health or even their lives.
I removed several footnote references, since they are not reproduced in this post to be pointed towards. The paper is available at the Social Science Research Network website.
