Weddings

A blog titled Life in Thailand has a January 10, 2009, post about an Isaan Wedding that I enjoyed reading. Gerry ought to post more often than he seems to manage to do.

Another account of a wedding is given in the blog Isaan Sytle! under a December 28, 2007, post: Thailand. A Isaan Wedding Ceremony. The prelude mentioned in that post is here.

The same blog has a more recent account of a wedding, this time from March 9, 2009: Thai Wedding Ceremony, isaan thailand. The author finished writing about the second part of this same wedding and posted it on March 13, 2009: Thai Wedding Ceremony, Part 2, Thailand. He did not post about part three until March 20, 2009: Thai Wedding Day, Part 3 Wedding Reception. Isaan Thailand.

I must confess that looking at all the beautiful Thai ladies in the photographs accompanying all of these accounts is making me nostalgic! In my defence, it has been a little more than seven years since I have been in Thailand. That last time — 2005 — was when I got married. Jack (my wife) came here to Canada the following year (that is, 2006), and then her two sons joined us in 2008. Trying to cover the costs of her various trips, and then the two boys, left no place for me to travel — at least, not in my financial reckoning of things. I often despair that I will never be able to visit Thailand again while I am still young enough to really enjoy myself there.

For a different perspective on weddings, back in the year I got married (2005), the Thai Visa forum had a post by a Farang woman who was marrying a Thai man — she asked forum members what she might expect, for she had found that she was unable to answer questions from her parents who were going to attend the event: Wedding, Isaan Style. The responses were fairly varied.

The blog My egg noodles has a recent (March 18, 2001) post consisting of photographs taken while Having fun at an Isaan Wedding.

Still another blog — Allen’s World — has a January 15, 2011, post titled Another Isaan Wedding – Perk and Puii that has lots of commentary and photos.

Behind the Noodle Curtain is another blog with an account, this one posted March 11, 2011: Isaan tour 2011: Wedding in Sakon Nakhon.

Also from March of 2011, the forum Gay Thailand has a post that is now four pages long titled Issan wedding — anyone been? I had expected that it would offer a wealth of varying experiences, but even before the first page was through, the thread had become adversarial, and I don’t suggest going beyond the early portion of page two. It is a perfect example of bickering, vulgar, self-important hijackers ruining what could have been a superb contribution to the subject.

A similar thing developed on a Thai Visa forum thread that was begun December 21, 2007, titled Question About Isaan Wedding. It’s incredible how many jack-asses comprise the population of forum memberships!

A number of photos — no commentary — are available on KohSamui.org: Pictures from a Wedding in Thailand and Thai Wedding and an Isaan village.

I want to close with an old photo-set from 2002. I never met my wife, Jack, until January, 2003. For whatever reason, she seems to have very few photos of herself prior to me coming into her life — I have never seen any childhood images, or shots of her as a teenager. At any rate, I came across the following set of photos in 2005 while searching the Web for images I wanted to use in a slide-show. The set was a collection of photographs that an American took while attending the Udon Thani wedding of a friend of his. As I browsed through the photos, imagine my great surprise to discover some images were actually of my wife Jack, taken before we had yet met!

I would like to post those that include my Isaan girl.

Here she is on the left, walking on what I believe is the Friendship Bridge over the Mekong by Nong Khai.

Here she is seated, facing the camera. Evidently they were lunching somewhere in Nong Khai close by the Mekong.

That is here in the blue at the extreme left in this next shot.

I am fairly sure that this is her in the foreground as the raft is readied for shoving off into the lake.

Here she is again by herself on this trail.

And here she is with the gent who is responsible for posting all of the photographs.

Jack might have figured into some of the other photos on the website I took these from, but I was not able to pick here out if she did. I seem to recall that she once mentioned that she was actually taking a few of the photographs at special occasions so that photographer Gerrit could be in some of the scenes, and thus she was not recorded.

Anyway, the photo sequence of this Udon Thani wedding is at a webpage titled Thailand Trip Report.

Thanks for the record, Gerrit! They gave me early glimpses of my wife that I would never otherwise have had.
