Northeast Thailand: Isaan

Anyone who is interested in learning about the people of Isaan should make their start by referring to Wikipedia‘s entry Isan.

More general descriptions can be found on many diverse websites ranging from Siamese Style — featuring clothing and other crafts produced by Isaan village women — to Christian missionary sites like Pray for Isaan, Joshua Project, and Thailand Covenant Church.

Thailand’s World gives a short overview of four of the main ethnic groups. Even some tourist-oriented sites like the German Thailand-Ticket.de can offer a little useful and interesting information, although the English translation provided at the given link is awkward. Another tourist site with something to say about Isaan is Chiang-Mai.org. And some sites that zero in on language education such as Learn Speak Thai can yield helpful insight.

So many websites offer these bits and pieces that — rather than risk becoming too boring — I am simply going to show some excerpts from some of them that focus on different aspects of Isaan and its people.  You can choose to visit the site or not, for some views are quite…opinionated:

British youngsters discover where rice comes from and experience the hardship of working like Thai rice field workers in North East Thailand. One particular episode focuses on rice farming in North East Thailand (Isaan). It really did make me appreciate just how hard these rice farmers work for This backbreaking work made me realize why so many elderly people in Isaan shuffle around bent over with spinal curvature problems. Anyway, here is the program…

Just four years later, in 2010, following at least 300 million baht of teacher training directed by the Ministry of Education, with much of it in the Northeast, the highest placed Isaan province was once again Udon Thani. Generally speaking, three potential reasons for this phenomenon have appeared in Thailand’s newspapers: 1) Isaan (mainly Lao) people are stupid (though to their credit, most newspapers merely report but do not take this stance); Isaan children suffer

Phi Faa Healing Music Ritual of Thailand (Issan) and Laos

Uploaded by mispda on Apr 30, 2009

Short form of a ethnographic video project about a shamanistic ritual in Lao and Northeast-Thailand (Issan) for healing illnesses. Phi Faa is a supernatural power residing in the sky and deified by the people of Northeast Thailand (Issan) and Laos. The Phi Faa Ritual is preferably celebrated for a person that rejoices the convalescence from a serious disease. The guests of a Phi Faa Ritual involve themselves into this highly spiritual ceremony with dancing around a decorated sacrificial altar. The dance lasts a full night and creates trance conditions for many of the participants. The guests believe Phi Faa will participate the ceremony and they expect healing and protection from unfavourable fortune.

Interested visitors can find more details about the Phi Faa Ritual and other rituals and traditions of Southeast Asia at www.spatz-darmstadt.de
