And speaking of Wikipedia, does anyone refer to the Talk section an article like the Isan one has? It can be illuminating.
Wikitravel also has a section on Isaan, although it is geared more for the tourist or traveler, obviously.
I recommend having a good look at a July 11 (2012) post at the blog I-nomad: 10 little known facts about Laos. The map just above was taken from “fact” #9: 9. Are Isaan people Laotian too? (Note: Although my post was first published on April 30, I am editing this post on October 22, 2012.)
If you are interested in a few very nice images, take a look at Herveille.net‘s page Isaan:
Pictures from the Isaan region in Thailand.
Isaan is located in the north-east of Thailand. It’s one of the poorest regions in Thailand. Most of the people make a living herding cows or buffalos or growing rice. This is where the famous sticky rice is grown. Isaan borders Cambodia and Laos. In fact most of the people living here are from Laos descent.
The following map is taken from a page titled Isaan, Thailand at a website called World Hotel Plan.
The map is okay — what caught my eye was the first statement in this leading paragraph:
Isaan is the region of North East Thailand which stretches from Bangkok towards the Laos and Cambodian borders. The region is largely distinct from the rest of Thailand being a largely agricultural community, historically part of the Khmer and Lao empires, with a language that different from the rest of Thailand. The food is different with sticky rice being a feature of all meals.
Isaan may take up about a third of Thailand in geography, but it’s still a bit of a drive from Bangkok to reach the Isaan Region.
This next map is from KnutAngstrom.se where you can read a nicely illustrated account of a November – December 2009 trip to Isaan.
Isaan is a region in Northeast of Thailand consisting of 19 provinces. Like other provinces in the country their names have the same name as their capital. This region on the border to Laos and Kambodja is the poorest in the country. Many of the girls working in Phuket are comming from this province. Periodically they send money home to their parents who in many cases take care of the children to the girl. The father to the children has in these cases abandoned the family.
There are now 20 Isaan provinces — Bueng Kan was formed out of the eastern portion of Nong Khai.
The blog Jetlagged Gourmet has a pretty good post published March 17, 2011, about what is both an Isaan and Lao favourite dish: All about the som tam. This dish was also more recently (October 18) posted about in the blog Travels in Laos and Isaan: Som tam – Thailand’s Green papaya salad. My Isaan wife often enough makes it here in Canada where we currently live — she doesn’t hold back on the hot red chili peppers.

A Culture and politics forum at Travelfish.org has a 2009/2010 thread titled Isaan and Laos – what’s the difference? that you may find curious — only a few posters got involved in what became a heated conversation.
Also in 2009 (March 5), an article was published titled Thailand: Isaan and Laos make a perfect twin-centre:
Adventurous Southeast Asia tour operators such as Audley Travel and All Points East (formerly Gecko Travel) are blazing the way in Thailand by combining itineraries to Isaan, one of the country’s least-visited areas, with overland trips into neighbouring Laos.
You might get a bit of a kick out of the distinction offered between Isaan and Lao girls at a Lao website called Lao Babes: Isaan Girls In North Eastern Thailand.
I referred already to the blog Travels in Laos and Isaan — it has an interesting May 21, 2010, post titled Buddhist monks in Isaan and Laos.
If you are ever curious to know what it’s like to live in an Isaan village, there are ventures such as Isaan Hometel. All I have to do, however, is accompany my wife back on one of her visits to the family home in Nong Soong near Udon Thani City.
