Back on February 25, 2007, a Farang school-teacher who is behind the blog Isaan Style! made an interesting post on the subject of students and their school-time use of the Thai website TeeNee.com, chat, and personal E-mails. It is now over four years later — I wonder if he has mellowed?
I had never heard of TeeNee.com, so I checked it out. As is quite general with Thai sites, it took awhile to load; and then when I began to explore it by clicking on links to various photos or stories, I was quite taken aback by how many of them are dead ends. My impression was that the site is rarely updated. And try as I did, I was never able to go to anywhere that could be described as racy.
Another site I never heard of before working on this post is Iisaan.com. It has a ‘chat room,’ which I ventured into. However, admin was the only presence, so I closed out. I do not get the impression that the site is updated with any kind of regularity, and much of the user contributions are pure garbage. I would have deleted most of it if the site was my own.
For a negative view of chat insofar as dating sites go, you may want to check out the undated reader submission to Stickmanbangkok.com that is titled A Tale of Isaan And Dating Agencies.
I have rare use of chat features. I suppose I have no quarrel with chat rooms in which I have willingly entered. But I do not at all like being on a site like Facebook or even my own Yahoo E-mail account when someone who knows me will suddenly see I am there and initiate chat. I do not like being drawn into it that way, for it is seldom that I have the time for it. I keep my Yahoo account set so that I am ‘invisible’ whenever I log in — and it is entirely for that reason.
I remember when the UdonMap forum first announced a chat room had been set up. This may have been as far back as 2005. Every once in awhile, I would enter the darn thing, but I was never able to find anyone else there. Some other members of the forum said similarly, although still others were able to time their visits to connect with one another. I don’t think there is a chat feature on the site now.
I am sure there are Isaan Thai sites with chat features where isaan people can do whatever it is that people do in chat rooms, but I am not a booster. I can see their purpose, though, and sometimes they can be a boon — technical support comes to mind. But as a social medium, I am not strong on chat at all.
