Currently, two budget airlines, Air Asia and Nok Air, and the national carrier, Thai Airways, operate from the airport.
Domestic Flights Thailand offers the following flight chart of the airlines that make the trip between Udon Thani and Bangkok (I am adding this chart in an April 29, 2012, post edit):
However, without any defining years attached to those monthly date spans, I honestly don’t know what to make of the chart’s currency. As I indicated, today is April 29, 2012, as I write this — so is the flight listed for January 4 to March 23 now discontinued?

Air Asia, Nok Air and Thai Air operate daily flights from Bangkok to Udon Thani, the flight takes around 55 minutes. Flights are also available with Nok Mini from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani.
There is a mini bus available for transport to and from the city between 05.30 – 20.00 hrs.

How is this for an endorsement? From a traveler posting on VirtualTourist April 4, 2011:
Gotta love this airline. I flew to Udon Thani from Bangkok and paid 1200 baht return including taxes. The best part was that I got there in an hour rather than half a day on the bus. The airline was very professional and the staff were friendly – on both counts different from my previous experiences with other budget carriers.
Obviously Air Asia has brought a lot of business to Udon Thani. There is a huge billboard o advertising them on the corner of Prajak and Tikattanon Rd in the center of town. I actually bought an Air Asia polo shirt on the plane (after I realised that I’d run out of clothes) and locals were giving me the thumbs up and saying “Air Asia”. Maybe they thought I was a pilot. I certainly hope not because I had a beer in my hand during most of my stay.
Anyway, Air Asia are definitely worth considering if you’re heading to the north-east.
The AirAsia website has a section on their home page that they call Latest from AirAsia — this report caught my interest:
Alert! 2012 AirAsia Exclusive Special Bonus Program IS A SCAM!
Fraudulent correspondence bearing the AirAsia name are currently being circulated via e-mail on the Internet. These e-mails claim to be from AirAsia and falsely indicate that recipients are AirAsia Exclusive Special Bonus winners and should contact them to provide personal or confidential information. This correspondence is being used in illegal schemes to collect sensitive personal information, such as bank account numbers, and to steal money and other assets.
There is no such thing as 2012 AirAsia Exclusive Special Bonus Program! If you receive such suspicious e-mail, do not reply or contact them.
That same section referred to their enquiry page where anyone — even non-customers — can ask for further information. At present, it has a five-language option in a drop-down box in the upper right of the page: Ask AirAsia.
Finally, do not neglect checking out the Udon Thani International Airport official website for its daily flight status charts (make your choice for Departures or Arrivals by ticking the option of choice just below the date).
Udon Thani Airport was refurbished in 2006 and now receives flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Loei. Thai Airways International, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia operate from this airport.
