Khon Kaen University is the largest university in the northeast of Thailand, and the third largest in the entire country. It is claimed that as a result of the huge student population, the City of Khon Kaen has a certain palpable energy lacking in other population centres in Isaan. I have never been to Khon Kaen, however, so I cannot comment.

According to a document I found on the Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) website listing Study Abroad Programs, Khon Kaen University offers the subjects of Thai Language, Culture, and Literature. What I am unclear about is whether that is the extent of what Khon Kaen University offers in the context of Office of International Programs (OIP); or if the Humanities are the only branch of subjects that BSC approves or is involved with at that specific Thailand institution, and other educational institutions in the West who support OIP may have their own preferences, thus approving still other subjects at Khon Kaen University.

One thing especially impresses me about Khon Kaen University — its heavy involvement in preserving and promoting the Isaan language. A 2004 document currently available on the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) website titled Isan: The Planning Context For Language Maintenance And Revitalization was an intriguing read for me. I just wish that I could access a fountain of youth ensuring me decades more of life; or alternatively, that the Internet had been available when I was a teenager back in the 1960s, and that I had become fascinated with Isaan as happened for me in 2002. If I had the decades more of life remaining to me, and/or the nimbler brain of an adolescent, I would love to immerse myself into learning Isaan and its script.

I have no idea how things have progressed and developed with the Isaan language and ‘Thai Noi’ at Khon Kaen University since that 2004 article, but I would hope that growth in this area has flourished, rather than remaining merely static or even declining.
