udon thani driving school

The UdonMap forum opened up a thread for the Udon Thani Driving School as a new sponsor back on March 2, 2009; however, an enquiry was posted this past February 22 (2011) indicating that the given website link was not functioning, and thus the poster was wondering if the school is still active. A forum member replied four days later that he believed that it was still operating.

Evidently that respondent was correct, for elsewhere on UdonMap I managed to locate a page devoted to the school: Udon Driving School. The website for the school that is given there is different from that which is listed in the forum introduction.

And I have in fact just now responded to the poster’s forum enquiry, and offered this alternate school webpage.

You might find a few other UdonMap forum threads informational, if not exactly inspirational — for instance, from this past December, DRIVING SCHOOL WITH A TRAINER WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH; and from 2009, Udon Driving School.

By the way, one other school I know of is P.J Driving School Udonthani, but I can not offer anything more about it than what is provided on that website.

Entry from: Nong Khai, Thailand
Entry Title: “Crossing into Laos”

Entry:

“Aug 11, 8:30am, we catch the bus that will start our journey to the border town Udon Thani, where we will cross into Laos. We did not get to Laos when we were in Asia in 2007, so we’re excited to add another new country to our resumes.

Thankfully the bus has a/c because it’s packed full and we have to stand. This first ride is only an hour to the main bus station in Phitsanulok so it’s not too bad. After a short while on the bus and a few side of the road stops some seats start to empty. Tamara gets a seat near the front of the bus and I go for one further back – but it’s already taken. But a very nice, insistent young university student gives us his seat to me. I try to tell him it’s not necessary, but he would not take no. He’s only about 20 I guess, and I think he wanted to practice his English. We talked about where we were going, where we were from, the farm lands we were driving through (tons of rice fields) and the festival he was going to for what he called “Mother’s Day”. We later learned that this mother was the Queen and it was her birthday. He commented how this bus ride was very expensive for him – which at less than $10 was not something I would have realized at first. The fact also that someone so young had so much politeness and offering and interest towards me was very humbling. After a short while he even told me it would be okay for me to lean my seat back and “rest” during the remainder of the ride. I surely do not ride much public transportation at home, but seeing this kind of generosity is just not what I would ever expect at home, where everything is much more “me-me-me” focused. We got to the next bus station station and very warmly parted ways. I hope he has a great life ahead of him!

That first bus ride was only about an hour. We quickly get pointed to the next bus which will take us the next 7 hours to Udon Thani. There is a light rain but we get our backpacks loaded under the bus and get our reserved and available seats near the back of the bus. The trip to Udon Thani takes us from city-like environment into the jungle. Up some/most of the hillsides the bus is reduced to a near crawl as the driver shifts to lower and lower gears.

We make a couple of pit-stops along the way. The first one was VERY basic – thank goodness its just a quick pee break. We go into non-consumption dehydration mode on trips like this – for a reason.

We are the only non-locals on the bus of about 50, so I think the bus attendant takes pride in letting us know how long we’ll stop and when we are arriving someplace.

We finally get to the main bus station in Udon Thani and as the bus is circling the building to park there are half a dozen tuk tuk drivers chasing (on foot) the bus to be there when it stops and people start getting off. It’s a gauntlet of offers to take us to our destination – but we don’t have a destination! This might have been the first time we don’t have a place pre-booked. A tuk tuk driver points to an open and friendly information desk where the guy actually speaks some (enough) English – and has a printed list of hotels. We communicate back and forth enough for him to locate a place close to the bus station.

We get the same tuk tuk driver, who is waiting and watching, and off we go in search of the hotel. The place is pretty decent, certainly acceptable for just the one night we want, and it has our greatly desired a/c. It’s okay to sweat all day long, but we are in fact soft enough that we like to shower and sleep in a bit of western comfort. Udon Thani Hotel, one night, $9!

Having not consumed much all day (food or drink), we drop our things in the room and go to the restaurant next door where we have yet another great Thai meal for next to nothing. It was a big outdoor place and we were about the only people there. Again, special …”
