udonthani aussie bar
The following information was mostly derived from the UdonMap Forum in its section Nightlife in Udon Thani — some of which requires forum membership to access.
First off, there have been several Aussies bars or pubs. The first was opened by Justin Raines (a little background on him here). The year was 2004. As UdonMap owner Lee stated it:
A few months before Justin opened the Aussie Bar a guy called Leif purchased the Little Mermaid Restaurant and renamed it UP2U Bar & Restaurant. And then a few more bars followed which gave birth to soi farang.
Soi Farang or Farang Alley developed fame beyond what one would expect of its few short years of existence. I was introduced to the strip of Western bars during my third visit to Thailand back in 2005. I had been visiting Udon Thani in each of the previous two years but was unaware that there might be such a Farang “neighbourhood.” If it had existed in 2003, I am convinced that I probably would not be married to the Isaan woman who is today my wife.
Anyway, Farang Alley was basically vacated by the end of April 2008 for impending demolition.
But back to Lee’s chronology of the Aussie bars. He has the Farang Alley demolition date wrong, but the point of this is to provide some narrative of the confusion that exists in relation to what is meant when someone refers to an “Aussie bar.” Posted February 19, 2010:
A little history about Aussie Pubs in Udon:
I believe Jingjoes was the first Aussie watering hole to open in Udon. Later the name was changed to Jingjoes Aussie Pub.
Aussie Pub 1 (Soi Farang) was opened by Justin in 2004 and later sold to a dutch guy called Jon. A year later the bar was pulled down when they demolished of soi farang. Jon re-opened in Nutty Park and called his new bar ‘Beer too Far’.
Aussie Pub 2 (Opposite UD Bazaar) was opened by Justin in 2005 and later sold to a couple of guys called Zac and Jim, they renamed the bar ‘Koala Bar’. The bar is still under their ownership but currently closed.
Downunder Bar (Wattana Nuwong Rd) was opened by Justin 2007 and later sold to an Irish guy called Sam. Sam renamed the Bar ‘Molly Malone’s’ and it closed one year later.
Aussie Bar (Adunyadet Road) was opened by Justin late 2007 and sold two years later. The Bar has been renamed ‘Lalita’s’ and is managed by an Australian lady called Ella.
Kangaroo Bar (Nutty Park) was opened by the owners of Jingjoes early 2009 and is currently closed.
A VirtualTourist review from January 1, 2006:

As an expat Aussie, I almost felt like it was my duty to seek this place out and have a drink. The interior looks much like an average Aussie Pub, somewhere you might wander in for a counter lunch or stop off at on a long road trip. They have a pool table, a TV room and various Aussie paraphenalia around the bar. The regulars aren’t necessarily Aussies themselves, but an eclectic mix of blow-ins, drunks and hardened expats. One thing is for sure, they make you welcome and treat you as one of their own in no time.
They have Australian beer in plentiful supply and also all the traditional Aussie pub cuisine. They also show sporting events such as AFL, cricket and rugby. It’s only a twenty-five minute ride in from the airport. On my second visit to Udon Thani, I just had a three hour layover – just enough time to head into town for a beer and a pie.
The official closing time is 1am but this is not a rule – more just guidelines (if you get my drift).
Continuing with incarnations of the Aussie bar, Lee’s history was submitted February 19, 2010, as I said earlier. A bit later that year — March 22 — he introduced Jingjoes Aussie Bar Udon Thani as an UdonMap sponsor.
Then on September 6, 2010, he introduced yet another sponsor to the forum: the Aussie Burger Bar – Nutty Park.
