Relationships
I have an Isaan wife. We have been married since May 30, 2005.
Would I ever consider another Isaan woman for my wife, if this marriage failed? Yes. But I would need to be in a position to stay in Thailand — I would not again bring my wife to my homeland to live.
And that proclamation is all I shall be venturing of my relationship in this post.
There was an article in The Nation published December 2, 2006, that generated a lot of discussion, since it was written by a Thai woman:
Don’t blame Isaan wives; women are all the same
by Veena Thoopkrajae
I’ve never thought of dating a farang. I’ve never thought of getting married to a farang.I’ve never thought of staying abroad with a farang husband.
But I’m by no means romantically xenophobic and I do understand why an increasing number of Thai women prefer Westerners to Thai men. It is also easily understood that Thai women are a popular choice for foreigners seeking help from Internet matchmakers.
What I doubt is the research finding by Khon Kaen University which suggests that Isaan women who marry foreigners cause major social changes, as they adopt their husbands’ customs and lifestyles. The research, led by Asst Professor Supawatanakorn Wongtha-nawasu, on the effect of cross-cultural marriages on families in the northeast of Thailand made headlines and caused hot discussions in Internet chat rooms.
She is clearly well-schooled in English. She would have to be, in order to be making her living as an English-language journalist. I believe she is an editor for that publication, in fact.
Neither is she unattractive — this photo is from Daily Express (November 30, 2009), another publication from Nation Multimedia Group which publishes The Nation:

Veena was reacting to some recent articles of the time, such as this one titled Foreign husbands flock to Thailand’s impoverished Isaan; and an older one from 2004 that had been published in The Nation and was titled Europeans Flocking To Isaan In Search For Wives.
She had a rather short-lived blog called Venus’ Vision that resulted in just 33 posts, all published in the month of December, 2006 — if the Blog Archive column at the right in her blog is correct.
You might enjoy this article that was possibly published in 2007, submitted by a reader of StickmanBangkok.com — it ably voices many of the usual strikes perceived to go against Isaan women (or people there in general):
You Married A Woman From Where?
By Cheerful Farang
I cringe when someone tells me they are married to a woman from Isaan.
I have zero respect for any foreigner who marries a woman from Isaan. The people of Isaan are the trailer trash of Thailand, looked down on by most of the Thai population and for very good reason. Don‘t take my word for it, take that of the Thais.
Most Thais see the people of Isaan as lazy, unskilled, poorly educated farmers whose purpose in life is to do the jobs that nobody else wants to do. Farm work. Factory work. Construction work. Maids. And of course whores.
You can find that sort of opinion extensively in the Web. But as I implied at the outset to this post, I am not in a mood today of making any personal elaborations. So, in what is an April 13, 2012, edit to this post, I am only going to offer these snippets for your further reference concerning Isaan wives:
Ms. Lanee opened the village in the memory of her mother-in-law who had wanted to retire in Isaan, but only if she could among friends. “This isn’t a resort for helping farang men find Thai wives,” said Ms. Lanee. “That is not …

Then again, I think men are often attracted to women with more “traditional” values – Isaan girls are likely seen as being better mothers and wives because of the rural or conservative upbringing. Isn’t that really the same in America?

A high percentage of Thai wives come from Thailand’s northeastern province of Isaan. This is one of the poorer regions of the country. Family bonds are very strong, and financial support by western men is a highly prized income source.

Why Thai Women marry Foreign Men
Uploaded by NotanIdiot2 on Feb 3, 2008
Thai woman’s fantasy of rich foreign husband (for they believe that no money means no love) meets western mans fantasy of eastern promise and the perfect wife.
What does this make?
A complete disaster, a marriage and a quick divorce and you lose loads of money.
Do not marry these pathetic creatures
